He will be laid to rest alongside his wife in Livingston, Texas. Born Aug. 7, 1924, in Whitney, Texas, he played basketball at Big Sandy High School in Livingston, Texas, and then attended Sam Houston Teacher's State College in Huntsville, Texas, to pursue a degree in physical education. A decorated veteran of World War II, he served as a corporal in the Second Armored Division of the U.S. Army. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the D-Day invasion at Normandy. He was awarded both a Purple Heart (three clusters) and the Silver Star. During the war, his sweetheart in Texas, Ruth Reaves, wrote him saying that she would like to marry. They were happily married for 36 years until she died of a prolonged illness in 1982, yet he remained devoted to her until his death. He proudly retired from Gulf Oil Company in 1985 after serving 38 years as a supervisor of offshore production. As a resident of Cut Off, he had a tremendous love of his community and its people. He had a positive, gentle spirit and never uttered an unkind word about anyone he knew. All will remember him as a passionate supporter of area athletic events, from Biddy Basketball to South Lafourche High School sports. Not only was he a fan of athletics, he also honored the athletes and coaches by remembering their achievements throughout their lives. He was a founding member of the South Lafourche High School Booster Club and served as club president for two years. Most of all, he loved his family and was dearly loved by them. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Reaves Wiley; one brother, John Wiley; beloved son, David Wiley; and granddaughter Jennifer Wiley. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Pat Scanlon; one daughter-in-law, Cecelia Wiley; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Marye Wiley, Leon and Cathy Wiley, and Hulen and Mabel Wiley; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins whom he adored.
