November 03. 2005 12:47PM Two killed in wreck Wednesday night By MIKA EDWARDS The Courier HOUMA -- Two people were killed and one is in the hospital after their convertible ran underneath an 18-wheeler on Woodlawn Ranch Road Wednesday night. The three men were in a 1998 Chrysler Sebring traveling on Woodlawn Ranch Road about 10 p.m. Police said the speeding car was nearing the road's intersection with La. 56 bound for Bayouside Drive when the driver veered into the oncoming lane to pass two other vehicles. The car drove through the red light at the intersection and ran underneath an oncoming 18-wheeler, police said. Theodore Blanchard, 18, of Chauvin and Gerard A. Billiot, 25, of Montegut were pronounced dead at the scene. Both men were passengers in the Sebring. The driver of the convertible, James Bryan Martin, 30, of Houma was injured and transported to Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center, police said. A hospital spokeswoman said he was not listed as a patient this morning. The driver of the 18-wheeler, Roosevelt Nevers Jr., who was not injured, gave a voluntary blood-alcohol test that indicated he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the wreck. Martin also was given a blood-alcohol test, but those results are still pending, Houma Police Lt. Todd Duplantis said. "Speed was a factor, it was definitely a factor," Duplantis said. He said police haven't determined how fast the car was going, but it's apparent from the severity of the injuries and damage that the car was speeding. The speed limit on Woodlawn Ranch Road is 55 mph.
