John Lyle Newfield, 84, a native of New Orleans, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, in Thibodaux. Visitation will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. to funeral time Friday at Chauvin Funeral Home. Prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, with burial in St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2. He is survived by one brother, Frank H. Newfield of Thibodaux; two sisters, Virginia Newfield of Thibodaux and Mrs. Guy M. (Marie Louise) Francis of Chattanooga, Tenn.; seven nieces and nephews, Paul C. Newfield III, Bonnie Burke, Michael Newfield, Mary Caroline Garland, Elizabeth Kaleida, Mary Catherine Corrigan and Martin Francis; and a numerous relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul C. Newfield Sr. and Marie Louise Terrell; and one brother, Paul C. Newfield Jr. He was born in New Orleans and baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on St. Bernard Avenue in New Orleans. During his formative years he served as an altar boy at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish on St. Roch Avenue in New Orleans. In 1945 he was ordained a Roman Catholic priest by New Orleans Archbishop Joseph Francis Rummel, at which time the young priest inherited the chalice and paten that had belonged to his former pastor at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, the late Msgr. Joseph A. Levesque. His parishes and assignments were St. Agnes Parish in Metairie from 1946-1950, assistant pastor; Sacred Heart Parish in Baton Rouge from 1950-1955; St. Henry in New Orleans from 1955-1957; St. Anthony of Padua in Barataria from 1957-1961, pastor, with responsibilities for two mission churches (Sacred Heart in Lafitte and St. Pius X in Crown Point); St. Genevieve Parish in Thibodaux from 1961- 1966, founding pastor; Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Westwego from 1966-1971, pastor; and St. Francis de Sales in Houma from 1971-1987, pastor. He was named monsignor in 1977, shortly before the founding of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux. With the creation of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux in 1977, his new title became rector of the cathedral, and he continued to serve in that capacity until his retirement from active parochial duties in 1987. He was a chaplain at Metairie Manor Retirement Home from 1987-1989 and Holy Savior Catholic Church in Lockport from 1990-1991, in residence. He retired to a private residence in Raceland from whence he served as chaplain to the Dominican Missionary Sisters. In 1991 he moved to Chateau Notre Dame in New Orleans. Msgr. Newfield served as a canon lawyer in the Tribunal of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, handling marriage cases. Even after his transfer to Houma, he continued to serve in that capacity. After the creation of the Diocese of Houma- Thibodaux in 1977, he was appointed chief judge of that diocese's tribunal. He was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus member, a member of the Knights of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and a member of the Canon Law Society of America. He attended Our Lady Star of the Sea Elementary School in New Orleans, Holy Cross High School from 1933-1935, St. Joseph Seminary at St. Benedict Abbey from 1935-1940 and Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans from 1940-1945, where he earned degrees in philosophy and theology. In 1945 he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. He celebrated his Golden Jubilee as a priest in 1995 with a festive reception at St. Francis de Sales in Houma.
