Please go to http://www.rootsweb.com/%7eusgenweb/la/terrebonne/obits/2006/t0602.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== HOUMA -- Julie Trosclair said her favorite part about Sundays was picking up the newspaper and seeing all the comments her father had written next to the stories and photographs. An avid reader, writer and cook, Ira Antoine Malbrough would wake up early on Sundays and write his thoughts in the newspaper margins. "And if he really wanted me to read something he would highlight it yellow to make sure we saw it," Trosclair said. Malbrough, who may hold the unofficial record for having the most letters to the editor published, died Thursday at age 91. Malbrough shared his views through numerous letters to the editors of The Courier and other newspapers. Family members aren't sure how many letters he's written, but they said it's at least in the hundreds. He kept a scrapbook of all the letters that were published. Though the letters were usually just two or three paragraphs long, his family said they made an impact. Rita Whitney Malbrough, Ira's wife of 67 years, said her husband knew how to get straight to point. Besides, if it was a long letter people wouldn't read it, she said, laughing. Rita said Ira Malbrough spurned other letters to the editor, whether they agreed with his point of view or not. His writing wasn't just limited to The Courier. He wrote to the Washington Post and other large papers, Rita Malbrough said. He also wrote to Janet Reno, former attorney general of the United States, she said. Reno's reply come on national television during a "60 Minutes" segment, said Barry Malbrough, Ira's son. Reno mentioned Ira Malbrough's name on the air but she pronounced it a little funny, Trosclair said. Beyond writing to newspapers, Malbrough loved to write in his journals, Trosclair said. He usually made a journal entry every day and went through stacks of journals. He tried to write in his journal as late as Monday, three days before his death, his wife said. "He wrote the date, Feb. 20," she said. "That's all he could write." Trosclair said her father wanted his children to keep the journals as a way to remember him. She said they plan to honor that wish. When he wasn't reading or writing, Ira Malbrough loved to garden, said Pat Rodrigue, Malbrough's daughter. He loved to watch things grow, she said. Rodrigue said he also like to fish, hunt and cook. One of his favorite pastimes was taking the family to a camp down the bayou. Born in Theriot, Ira Malbrough's mother died when Ira was 4, Rita Malbrough said. He lived in an orphanage until his father remarried, she said. Because he had seven siblings, Ira learned to cook to help out, she said. His specialty was jambalaya, several family members said. Rita Malbrough said her husband operated a restaurant in 1955 along Barrow Street across from what is now Town Hall. Students from the nearby St. Francis School would come to eat lunch, and then come to dance after school since the restaurant had a jukebox. From there he worked as a carpenter. He worked on the Houma Tunnel, Sunshine Bridge and built the family's east-Houma house in 16 days, Rita Malbrough said. Ira Malbrough's final letter to the editor was published in December. Appropriately enough it was titled "It's time to get back to democracy." The late Mike Slaughter, former executive editor of The Courier and a friend of Malbrough's, once wrote that Malbrough was a local yellow-dog-Democrat. Slaughter explained in column the term is used to describe someone who would rather vote for an old yellow dog than vote Republican. His family had plenty of stories to offer about his political preference for the Democratic party. "He used to write GOP SOB all the time," Barry Malbrough said. Family said Ira Malbrough would study every election ballot carefully and then discuss it with the family. He encouraged family members to vote. "Nine times out of 10 we voted the same," Trosclair said. Rodrigue said her father will now get to share his political views with a different audience. "He probably wants to know if God is a Democrat," she said, laughing. ======================== February 26. 2006 1:26AM Melissa Parker Picture ========== A photo is available for this file.
