GAUDET NYT Regional Newspapers Advertisement THIBODAUX -- A local fire department lost a friend this week. Phil Ayo's association with Thibodaux Fire Co. No. 1 and the Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department dates back to 1952. Through the years, he rose through the ranks, giving of himself to his company and his department, so much so that his colleagues bestowed on him the honor of "Chief for Life" in 1994. Ayo died on Wednesday. He was 78 years old. Some of those active in Thibodaux Fire Co. and the Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department remembered Ayo this week as one who had the best interest of his company and department in mind, a good leader and a good friend. Danny Ledet and Ayo were "old buddies" -- the two were in the same fire company, and Ledet recalled Ayo's dedication and relentless spirit when it came to competition. They were team members during competitive drills that test department members' fire-fighting skills. Although they lost the first year they competed, they rebounded, winning the competition for the next three years in a row -- in 1978-80 -- and becoming the first to retire the competitive-drill trophy. Curtis Hue also considered Ayo a friend. The two served together in the Thibodaux Fire Co. for 46 years, said Hue, who joined the fire company in 1959, seven years after Ayo. Following Hue's training, the two men got to know each other well. "He was my leader, and when he started coming up in the ranks, when he got out of office as captain, I became the captain," said Hue. Ayo took on many roles, including director of training for the volunteer fire department. A board member for Thibodaux Fire Co. No. 1 for several years, Ayo also held significant posts in the department. In 1975, he was elected second-assistant chief and served in that post until 1976. He was then elected first- assistant chief and served there until 1977. In 1983, Ayo became treasurer, a post he kept for nearly a decade. His efforts were the result of his commitment to the department, Hue said. He recalled many discussions between himself and Ayo during which the two did not always agree. But they'd always work it out. "That's because of working together, but we always had a lot of admiration for each other. We weren't always on the same side, but we always came to a mutual agreement," said Hue. "He was a great guy. He loved the department." Ayo is survived by his wife, Mariese Steiner Ayo, a daughter and two sons. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated this morning at St. Joseph Co- cathedral in Thibodaux. ======================== June 17. 2006 12:48AM Nolan Bonvillain Nolan G. Mitchell Hubbard, 37, was shot in the head before dawn outside the former Pell's Motel, 1103 Lafayette St., in what police say was a botched drug deal. He was taken to West Jefferson Medical Center in Harvey in critical condition and pronounced dead at 1 a.m. Saturday. The man accused of shooting him -- 26-year-old Jerome Williams of 713 Lafayette St. -- remains in the Terrebonne Parish jail. He had been charged with attempted first-degree murder; police said the charge will be amended to first-degree murder. Houma Police spokesman Lt. Todd Duplantis said the investigation is ongoing, but detectives think other people may have been involved in the shooting. Police aren't sure of the exact events preceding the shooting but say Hubbard frequently purchased illegal drugs. Williams, they added, was selling him crack cocaine that morning. It was his tattoos that helped police determine the injured man, the one on his left arm says "Death before dishonor." The one on his right is a picture of barbed wire. Hubbard was from Huntsville, Texas, and had traveled between that state and Louisiana for the past four years, family members said. He was staying in the Houma-Thibodaux area to be close to his daughter, who is 8 or 9, the family said. They didn't know his ex-wife's current last name or where she and the child live. Tim Hubbard said his brother was living in Grand Caillou and worked on an offshore oil platform. Velma "Hope" Wallace, Hubbard's mother, said her son had used drugs on and off for the past 20 years. He would complete a rehabilitation program and sober up, only to take up the habit again a few months later, she said. Wallace said the last she heard, Hubbard had been sober for seven months. "He just got on the wrong track," Wallace said. "Mitchell was much loved. He had a problem, but he was still loved." Before he started using drugs, his family said, Mitchell had a varied career. He was a former Marine, had served in the Navy and once worked as a Seattle police officer. While in the Navy, his family said, he was an emergency-medical technician and worked in Florida-area emergency rooms. Wallace, Tim and Michael Hubbard, Mitchell's fraternal twin, traveled to Mitchell's bedside Friday night after they were notified he had been shot. "He was on life support until we got here," said Tim. The family said some good would come of his death because his organs will be donated to people who need them. The shooting was directly in front of the former Pel's Motel, decried as a derelict structure that attracts drug activity and violence by neighbors who say it should be shut down. The building hasn't been used as a hotel in about 40 years. Building owner S.P. LaRussa says the trouble is caused by outsiders who hang out at the 13-apartment building, not the families who live there, and police should enforce the trespassing laws more aggressively. Police say the building is a constant source of drug and prostitution complaints. Friday's shooting took place a week after another man was shot in the neck at his Prince Collins Street home. Kenneth Garner Jr., 18, has been at Terrebonne General Medical Center in since the June 9 shooting. His 1-year-old daughter, who was struck in the hand by the same bullet as she slept next to him, was treated and released the same day. Police are still searching for that gunman, described by Garner's girlfriend as a man with his face wrapped in a black T-shirt who came into their bedroom unexpectedly and started firing. No suspect has been named in that investigation, but police say the two shootings do not appear to be connected. Anyone with information is asked to call the Houma Police Department at 873- 6371. ======================== June 18. 2006 1:27AM Viola Legendre Picture ========== A photo is available for this file. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Rolfe Anding and Virginia Lewis. She grew up in Houma and graduated from Terrebonne High School. She attended Nicholls State University and began her teaching career at Little Caillou Elementary School in 1963 as a 19-year-old. A 35-year resident of Austin, she was a retired school teacher having taught for 23 years at Popham Elementary School in the Del Valle Independent School District. During her retirement she was a university supervisor/mentor of student teachers at Texas State University in San Marcos. She touched many lives. She made life better for many as a teacher, wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She offered every student that she taught respect, warmth, security, love, knowledge, her time and best effort, rules that were consistent and fair and a promise to continually seek new knowledge from which the student drew. Her accomplishments were not accompanied by the sounds of a brass band, rather by brief whispers of joy and feelings of well being. She felt a sense of accomplishment when a detached seven year-old with severe behavioral problems slowly began to adapt; take pride in an increasing number of good days; and on the last day of school said, "Mrs. Walker, you know...you know.. I love you." This world is a much better place because she was with us for 61 years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hospice Austin's Christopher House, 2820 E. Martin Luther King Blvd., Austin, Texas 78702 (512) 322-0747.
