Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. today at Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Funeral Home, with burial in Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Memorial Park. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Rolfe Anding and Virginia Lewis. She grew up in Houma and graduated from Terrebonne High School. She attended Nicholls State University and began her teaching career at Little Caillou Elementary School in 1963 as a 19-year-old. A 35-year resident of Austin, she was a retired school teacher having taught for 23 years at Popham Elementary School in the Del Valle Independent School District. During her retirement she was a university supervisor/mentor of student teachers at Texas State University in San Marcos. She touched many lives. She made life better for many as a teacher, wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She offered every student that she taught respect, warmth, security, love, knowledge, her time and best effort, rules that were consistent and fair and a promise to continually seek new knowledge from which the student drew. Her accomplishments were not accompanied by the sounds of a brass band, rather by brief whispers of joy and feelings of well being. She felt a sense of accomplishment when a detached seven year-old with severe behavioral problems slowly began to adapt; take pride in an increasing number of good days; and on the last day of school said, "Mrs. Walker, you know...you know.. I love you." This world is a much better place because she was with us for 61 years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hospice Austin's Christopher House, 2820 E. Martin Luther King Blvd., Austin, Texas 78702 (512) 322-0747. Please go to http://www.rootsweb.com/%7eusgenweb/la/terrebonne/obits/2006/t0607.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== HOUMA -- Family and friends remember Rannie Duplantis Jr., a Terrebonne sheriff's deputy who died Monday at age 63, as an ordinary hero whose humble spirit encouraged and inspired those around him. His son, Jody Duplantis, and daughters, Amy Pellegrin and Kim Bergeron, said their father was a caring and loving man who was always there for his children and grandchildren. Rannie Duplantis was buried today in the St. Joseph Catholic Church cemetery in Chauvin, where he was a faithful parishioner. Born and raised in Chauvin, Rannie Duplantis stayed true to his roots. A U.S. Air Force veteran, Duplantis participated as a commander for the American Legion Post No. 380 in Chauvin. He was active with the Legion on the local, state and national levels, helping to organize various posts and squadrons. He was also passionate about his work with the Sons of the American Legion, assembling fund- raisers for child welfare. Friend and former coworker David Duke, a courtroom bailiff, said Duplantis convinced him to transfer from the American Legion Post No. 401 to the Chauvin branch. This transfer pushed Duke to become more active with the Legion; he has since become an adjutant, which is a secretary for the Legion's meetings. "He had a very even temper," Duke said. "He could get angry, but he wasn't the type of person to just blow up or vent on others." Although he was battling lymphoma off and on for 12 years, Rannie Duplantis never imposed his problems on others. "He never complained about the treatment," Jody Duplantis said. "If anyone ever needed him, needed to be picked up, he was there as a friend." Jody claimed that none of them knew that Duplantis was losing his battle until May of this year after a trip to the emergency room. Even then he was trying to convince his family that nothing was wrong. Despite his efforts to comfort his loved ones, Duplantis' rapid weight loss and increasing frailty told a different story that was nearing the end. Duplantis was also known for having a good sense of humor. He was easygoing and could lighten up any predicament. Duke said Duplantis could find humor and irony in almost any situation. He was the type of guy who didn't dwell on the past and accepted life and all its trials with an admirable stoicism. Rannie's favorite hobby reflected his steady patience and meticulous nature: building and furnishing elaborate dollhouses. He started handcrafting these about 10 years ago as a way to relieve stress and relax. Soon after he had his own workshop-office in his home. Both of his daughters and all of his granddaughters have one of these treasures. Amy Pellegrin claimed to have had three or four of them, including one that resembled the Southdown Plantation House, but it was lost in Hurricane Rita. Jody Duplantis said even his wife received a dollhouse from his father. Unfortunately, for the past two years, Duplantis was unable to make his dollhouses because the lymphoma treatments were making him so sick. Rannie Duplantis worked for the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office. He began working in the motor pool, where he maintained the sheriff's vehicles, while his twin brother, Ronnie Duplantis, was sheriff. After his brother's term, Rannie Duplantis quit the Sheriff's Office. Current Sheriff Jerry Larpenter said he re-hired Duplantis in 1994 as a paper servant in the corrections office, where he soon became an officer. "Rannie was always the type to help people," Larpenter related. "He was never a complainer; he did his job professionally, always gave 100 percent." He added gravely, "Rannie was going to retire, but he never got the chance to." ======================== July 07. 2006 2:18PM Bethany Hebert Picture ========== A photo is available for this file. Please go to http://www.rootsweb.com/%7eusgenweb/la/terrebonne/obits/2006/t0607.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== HOUMA -- Johnny M. Jaccuzzo, 94, died July 1, but he left behind a legacy of community involvement, business ventures and a love for the outdoors that his family and friends will long cherish. He will be most remembered, said his son Carey Jaccuzzo, for his love of fishing, a caring spirit and meticulousness. Jaccuzzo began his working career as a sugar-cane-truck driver for his father, Joseph Jaccuzzo, who owned several plantations, Carey said. As the years passed, Johnny Jaccuzzo started businesses of his own. He was president of Jaccuzzo Realty Co. and Jaccuzzo Land Co., which also included ownership in the Bijou and Drive Inn Amusement Co. The Bijou movie theater was a downtown Houma landmark for years, one of several local movie houses. It was between Roussel and Barrow streets, across Main Street from the present memorial park and footbridge. It burned in February 1953. For more than three decades Jaccuzzo also owned and operated a new car and truck dealership on Barrow Street, selling Studebaker cars and trucks. He served as chairman of the board of the Houma Housing Authority for 18 years, heading the panel that oversaw the parish's public-housing facilities. But one of his father's greatest sources of pride, Carey said, was the Terrebonne Sportsman League which he co-founded in 1948. The league began as simple camaraderie among a few fishermen, he said. "Very few people had boats back then," he said. The fishermen would catch a ride with passing shrimpers who'd drop them off at the bank and pick them up on the way back. Jaccuzzo also served as president of Whisky Pass Silver King Association, an exclusive fishing club. Fishing was a family affair, Carey said. Waking up at 3:30 Sunday mornings, the Jaccuzzo family would attend fisherman's mass at St. Francis de Sales Church in Houma before leaving for a weekend at the fishing camp. "He was meticulous," Carey said. "He always said, ëIf you own something and take care of it, it'll last forever.' " Jaccuzzo had a weakness for newer, better boats -- owning 57 during his lifetime, Carey said. He enjoyed rigging them with new equipment, Carey said. Jaccuzzo often included local priests and friends in the family getaways. They, too, joked about his attention to cleanliness. "You always took your shoes off at Jaccuzzo's camp," Luis Routier Jr. said. His father, Luis Routier Sr., was Jaccuzzo's best friend for over 30 years. "And you always made sure to clean the boat," Routier added. Although, as a business owner, he had many responsibilities, Jaccuzzo took pleasure in helping other people. When one of the theaters he owned needed extra help, Jaccuzzo would stay late selling popcorn or tickets, Carey said. He also took part in food and clothing drives for the elderly and low-income families. After becoming a parishioner at St. Gregory Barbarigo Church in Houma, he used his community connections to raise money to build a church, daughter Susan Henry said. He received The Bishop Hanna award for his volunteer efforts. In spite of his busy work life, he remained a private man, favoring quiet evenings at home over social events, Carey said. "He was a family man," Henry said. ======================== July 08. 2006 1:40AM Earl Williams Picture ========== A photo is available for this file.
