Please go to http://www.rootsweb.com/%7eusgenweb/la/terrebonne/obits/2006/t0607.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== By JEREMY SHAPIRO Senior Staff Writer HOUMA - Every night of the week Marion Cecele Edsberg would invite someone into her home to visit. No television was watched. No board games were played. Listening to music was not an option because she had no stereo. An evening with Cecele meant a couple of cocktails and hours of conversation and stories. And she had no shortage of either. Cecele traveled the world, met famous authors and even visited with Madame Marie Curie, who won a Nobel Prize in physics and chemistry. But Edsberg, who died July 2 at the age of 97, may be best remembered for treasured friendships with one of Houma's most famous residents, Dr. Thaddeus I. St. Martin and his wife, Gladys. "She was one of my favorite people," said Tommy Cobb, a Houma resident, historian and family friend. "She devoted her life to the St. Martins and the community." Cobb said he found conversation with Edsberg so interesting, hours would go by without him knowing. District Court Judge Randy Bethancourt was another of Edsberg frequent visitors. "She never said anything bad about anyone," Bethancourt said. "She was always upbeat and cheerful and at ease everywhere she went." Edsberg was born in 1909 and raised in Chicago. Her dad was from Chicago, but her mom hailed from New Orleans. Edsberg's grandparents lived in New Orleans and, during a visit, she was offered a job at Siler's Bookstore. With an interest in library science, Edsberg decided to make the move south in the early 1930s. Cobb said it was at Siler's that Edsberg met St. Martin for the first time. St. Martin was a well-known radiologist, who later became a best-selling author. As an avid reader, St. Martin traveled to New Orleans on his day off to borrow books at Siler's, Cobb said. When the two met, an immediate friendship was formed. St. Martin wanted his wife to meet Edsberg so he invited her to Houma. Eventually, Edsberg moved here to work as a secretary in St. Martin's medical practice, Cobb said. She moved into the second floor of the St. Martin's home and became like a foster daughter to them, he said. "The St. Martins didn't have kids," Bethancourt said. "For all intensive purposes, she was part of the family." With Edsberg's help, St. Martin took to writing. He would sleep for a few hours and wake up at midnight or 1 a.m. anxious to write, Cobb said. He eventually published the best-selling book "Madame Toussaint's Wedding Day." Edsberg later received the rights to publish the book, which she eventually gave to Southdown Plantation. There is a Dr. Thaddeus I. St. Martin room, complete with his desk and memorabilia, at the plantation. When the St. Martins died, they left their belongings to Tulane University with the stipulation that Edsberg could continue to live in their Park Avenvue home, Cobb said. She remained there until her death. With Bethancourt's help, Edsberg established a medical-school scholarship at Tulane for students from Terrebonne. Bethancourt called Edsberg's death the end of an era for several reasons. Edsberg never married and neither she or her brother had children, so this was the end of the line for her family. But it also marked the end of an era of a lifestyle seldom seen in today's hustle-and-bustle world. "People don't live like this anymore," Bethancourt said. "Having people over in the living room to sit and talk. We finally installed a black-and-white television with an antenna, but she didn't like to watch it." Cobb said Edsberg was very active in the old Houma-Terrebonne Community Concert Association and the Little Theater. She acted in plays during the 1950s and 1960s and attended most operas in New Orleans. Edsberg met some famous literary figures including John Steinbeck and Lyle Saxon, a New Orleans historical and fiction writer, when they visited the St. Martins home. In those days, Bethancourt said, the writers would gather to drink wine and talk about writing and life. Steinbeck included his visit to Houma in a book he wrote called "Travels With Charley." It was a travel log Steinbeck penned about his journey with his companion, a poodle named Charley. Here's an except from the book. "There lives my old friend Doctor St. Martin, a gentle, learned man, a Cajun who has lifted babies and cured colic among the shell-heap Cajuns for miles around. I guess he knows more about Cajuns than anyone living, but I remembered with longing other gifts of Doctor St. Martin. He makes the best and most subtle martini in the world by a process approximating magic." Another guest at the St. Martin home was Curie, a Nobel prize winner in the early 1900s. She was the first person to win two Nobel prizes and invented X- rays. Curie came to talk science and medicine with St. Martin. The site of these famous encounters was the elegant St. Martin home near downtown Houma. The home itself was designed by Leon Weiss, the architect for the Huey Long administration, Cobb said. He designed the state capital and governor's mansion in Baton Rouge. Thanks to Edsberg's dedication, the home remains in great shape today and receives compliments from visitors of all ages. Edsberg liked to travel and her home includes mementos from some of her journeys. She went on about 30 cruises, including six with longtime friend Marguerite Roper. The trips included visits to Guatemala, Spain, Portugal and Morocco, Roper said. Cobb and Roper said Edsberg didn't want a big deal made when she died. Cobb asked her if they could at least get some friends together to have a drink and remember her life. "She said that would be OK," Cobb said. ======================== July 14. 2006 3:36PM Helen Lirette Picture ========== A photo is available for this file. Please go to http://www.rootsweb.com/%7eusgenweb/la/terrebonne/obits/2006/t0607.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== Joseph Junius Jackson, otherwise known as "Cool Joe," was the type of man who laughed things off, stopping trouble before it got out of hand, his family and friends said. Jackson died July 9 at age 59 after suffering a fatal heart attack. His co- workers found him in the bathroom at Burger King on Prospect Drive in east Houma, where he worked as a janitor. Family and friends gathered Monday at Community Funeral Home, where his brother- in-law, the Rev. Kerry Matthews, officiated his service. Cool Joe was an honest, straightforward man with no real enemies, those gathered agreed. And it was apparent that he loved his mother, wife and children the most. His son, Tory Jackson, said Joe taught him to love his family and romance his wife. Tory said Joe wanted to develop strong family ties, so he made sure his brood cooked and ate together just about every night. They would talk and resolve problems at the supper table, and they would leave the table as a family. Tory said he incorporates that same practice into his own family's routine. He also remembers sitting around the fireplace on cold nights, roasting marshmallows and listening to his father and mother, the late Zona Bell Matthews Jackson, talk about their childhood. Frequently, Joe played music in the living room and danced with his wife while the children peeked in on them from other rooms -- another trick Tory learned from his father that he uses to keep his marriage vital. "Chivalry is dead now," Tory said, "but my dad was smooth serious." Tory said if he had to pick an icon to match his dad, it would be Snoopy's alter ego Joe Cool wearing dark sunglasses snapping his fingers to the beat. Theron Jackson, another of Joe's sons, said Joe loved music and reading, as well as writing stories, mostly mysteries, and poetry. He read the Bible about 20 times, not because he was religious but because he thought it was a really good story. He also liked reading the dictionary and learning new words. Theron likes to write too, a skill he didn't realize he shared with anyone else in the family until recently because Joe didn't talk about his writings. "He wanted me to do something with my works," Theron said, "because he never did anything with his." Joe also loved listening to old-school rhythm and blues. Sam Cooke and Curtis Mayfield were among his favorites. Theron remembers walking into the house and being welcomed by his father's music. Joe's other joys were movies and collecting comic books, a hobby he picked up as a child. Mattie Matthews, Joe's sister-in-law, said he was a "fun-loving, easy going person. Joe was just Joe, always smiling." Calvin Holliday, a friend of the family, said he met Joe through his brother, Butch. Joe and Butch lived across the street from each other and they were always having barbecues and drinking beers. "His laugh would sneak up on you," said Terry Bonvillian, another friend of the family. "You wouldn't even think he was listening to you, and he would just start laughing at something you said." Joe held several jobs in his life. He was a supervisor at the post office, worked for the City of Houma and worked several places as a janitor and carpenter. His first janitorial job was for Pioneer Plus TNT, owned by friend Terry Bonvillian Sr., and his last was with Burger King. Joe was cremated, and his family hasn't yet decided on how his ashes will be dispersed. Tory said the family is talking about dividing them into individual urns. Tory said he wants to put his share in a gold Faberge egg because his father loved those. ======================== July 19. 2006 1:17PM Jo Ann Kern Jo Ann J.
