Please go to http://www.rootsweb.com/%7eusgenweb/la/terrebonne/obits/2006/t0607.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== THIBODAUX -- Carl E. Heck, who for decades worked for local government and in private business and who is said to have been the first licensed civil engineer in Lafourche Parish, died Sunday at 95. The cause of death was heart failure, according to his daughter, Susan Heck Schwab. Heck lived in Thibodaux for more than 50 years. He was born in Bruly on Aug. 8, 1910, to a blacksmith and piano teacher. Heck was the middle child in a family of 10 children, his son, Carl Heck Jr., said. One of the elder Heck's siblings died at a young age. When he grew older, his family moved to nearby Port Allen. Eventually, Heck and each of his siblings would travel by ferry across the river to Baton Rouge to attend college at Louisiana State University, where their father, Henry J.B. Heck, taught metal working. Heck received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1931 at the age of 20, working as a janitor in high school and college to help pay tuition, his son said. He later served as a captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in World War II. When he returned home from war, he got a job with The Texas Co., which would later become Texaco. During his tenure there, Heck was charged with finding a location for the first oil well in the Gulf of Mexico, his son said. It was while working for the company that Heck met his future wife, Verna Mae Talbot, a schoolteacher in Golden Meadow at the time. The couple were married 68 years. In 1949, the Hecks and their three children moved from Houma to Thibodaux, where Heck's sister lived and where he would open his own engineering firm, holding true to his strongly-held belief that whenever possible, people should work for themselves. But Heck's time in the oil business would inform his perspective to come. "He was a man's man," his daughter recalled. "He loved to talk to men about the oil companies and that kind of thing." Heck was an avid story teller, relatives said, who loved above all talking about his family and his work. He recorded many of his life's stories, even into his old age, his daughter said. One of his favorites related to an especially daunting task that involved moving an out-of-state church to Houma. Engineering was his passion, Schwab said of her father, who relatives said served as the first president of the Bayou Chapter of the Louisiana Engineering Society. "I never knew him to talk about much else," Schwab said. Well past retirement, Heck tackled engineering riddles for fun. He also was known for his unyielding opinions, those who knew him said. Heck had perhaps an especially influential role in his children and grandchildren's lives, helping instill in them a belief that education was all- important, Schwab said. "He thought that women should stay home" to take care of children, his daughter recalled. "When I got married, he stayed on my husband until he went to law school because husbands had to take care of their wives. My brothers had to be engineers. I don't think they had a choice." A person "wasn't worth his salt," Heck Jr. said of his father's view, "if they didn't have their feet on the floor by 5 o'clock in the morning." Even in the summer, the son recalled, his father had "no tolerance for children who dragged in bed." Both of Heck's sons would obtain engineering degrees, though Heck Jr. also received his law degree and now works as a real-estate broker in Houma. David Heck followed in his father's footsteps and opened an engineering firm in Thibodaux. Heck's daughter would eventually open a psychology practice, but not until her youngest child was a teenager -- a delay she attributes largely to her father's prodding. Despite his traditional view of a woman's role, Schwab said her father attributed much of his life's philosophy -- in particular his business ethic and belief in education -- to his mother, Hortense Dupont Heck, who taught her children a love of music and who made certain that each obtained at least one degree. Although he closed his engineering firm about 15 years ago, according to his son, Heck kept mentally active by working with numbers. He learned to use a computer at 85, Schwab recalled, and became fascinated by the stock market and trading stocks online. "That's what entertained him in his later years," Heck's daughter said. "He did that all day, every day." "He had concepts," said Warren Authement, Heck's neighbor who inducted his friend of half a century into his Tri Parish Hall of Fame last year. Heck, Authement said, was "highly intelligent" with a compassion for others that perhaps was not widely-recognized. Authement, a former superintendent of Lafourche Parish schools, said while he held that post, he was apt to consult Heck on various business matters. "His advice was always good," he said. "If there was anything I remember him for, it was his understanding of life and his good fellowship and his good feelings toward everybody." "He was a really nice gentleman," said Rea Gilbert, a neighbor of Heck's for 50 years. "He was a gentleman all the time." Heck is survived by his wife, Verna Mae Talbot Heck of Thibodaux; their three children, Susan Heck Schwab of Houma, Carl E. Heck Jr. of Houma and David T. Heck of Thibodaux; sisters Lilla May Moreau Bennett and Virgie Heck, both of Baton Rouge; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He married, raised a family and owned his own successful business, all while battling multiple sclerosis, the disease that claimed his life July 14. He was 67. Multiple sclerosis is an auto-immune disease that affects the central nervous system. There is currently no cure for the disease. Vicki Ledet, detailed her love for her father and her pride in his many accomplishments in a eulogy that she wrote and read aloud at his funeral. He was a hardworking person driven to succeed, she said. A Thibodaux native and resident who owned and operated his own business, Chiasson's Welding Service, for 30 years. Vicki said her father's ambition was an inspiration to her, and she owes her success in the business world to him. She, her brother and sister inherited something else from their father: his stubbornness. Raymond had what Vicki calls "little man syndrome," which she explains is a "small man who is very loud and cocky to compensate for his lack of physical stature." Raymand had a tendency of putting up walls to protect his emotions and not many were able to peer over them. Although his exterior was rough, Vicki said "he was like putty in the hands of his grandchildren." His granddaughter Lacey rode her bicycle indoors while other grandchildren, Jenny and Drew, enjoyed roller skating in Raymond's home, something he would never allowed his own children to do. Raymond also reveled in playing card games with Drew. Yvette Chiasson, Raymond's wife, said he loved fishing. The couple owned a fishing camp in Dulac where they would often get together with friends and family to boil crabs and shrimp. Raymond was a year-round fisherman; fishing in salt water and fresh water according to season. According to Yvette, her husband was Navy veteran, but he was not active in the reserves or veteran organizations. Yvette said her husband had been ill for quite some time and she had taken care of him at home with the help of hospice workers. Raymond's illness gave the family a chance to reconnect. Vicki's eulogy expresses how her father's condition turned her parents' relationship around and renewed their love for one another. Raymond and Yvette "were two people able to share their innermost fears, thoughts and feelings." The couple's children were also able to resolve issues with their father, and he was able to dig up buried feelings for them and say without awkwardness "I love you." It was a sentiment that they echoed. Vicki used it as the close to her father's eulogy which ends simply, "I love you Daddy." Remembering celebrates the lives of people in Terrebonne or Lafourche parishes who have recently passed away.
