Please go to http://www.rootsweb.com/%7eusgenweb/la/terrebonne/obits/2006/t0608.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== HOUMA -- He described himself as just an "immigrant" to Terrebonne Parish who found the people friendly and helpful. Christian Louis "Buster" Olivier, soldier, businessman, elected official and community servant died quietly Friday night at his home. He was 94. Olivier is remembered as a long-time manager of the former Dupont's Department Store, as a five-term Houma City Council alderman-at-large, for his dedication to his church, his active Rotary Club membership and for guiding the Terrebonne Historical and Cultural Society as its president from 1982 to 1996. Born in Bogalusa in 1911, Olivier found employment in Houma in the late '20s as a salesman for South Coast Sugar Refinery. Soon, said daughter Marie Lynette Rhodes, he had taught himself business skills using a mail-order accounting course. He relied on that accounting knowledge throughout his business and public- service life, up until this year when he stepped down as a board member of Teche Federal Bank, his daughter said. "He had an active life," she said of her father. "He had a kind heart, and he served the public in every way." Olivier joined the Louisiana National Guard in Houma in 1930 and before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor was inducted in the Army as a company commander. He served 15 months in Europe in World War II and received the Purple Heart, Silver Star and several other military decorations before returning to Houma to serve as battalion commander until 1959. In government life, Olivier was elected Houma alderman-at-large in 1946, serving as mayor pro tempore and airport commissioner during this time. "He was a fine man," recalls Terrebone Parish Clerk of Court Bobby Boudreaux. "He was Houma alderman-at-large when I became clerk. He often ran unopposed." In 1965, as chairman of a Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce committee, Olivier promoted a Youth Government Day program for students at four area high schools. He said he was particularly interested in helping young people "become mature and responsible adults ... better informed than those of a few years ago." Community activist Hartwell Lewis knew Olivier as a Rotarian. "He was a member of Rotary more than 50 years, and a very close friend," Lewis said. Olivier, a past Rotary president, wrote one history of the local organization, and 25 years later, helped edit the revision last year, Lewis said. In 1985, Olivier was honored as The Courier's "Most Useful Citizen" for Terrebonen Parish for 1984. In remarks at the presentation banquet, he credited the people of Terrebonne for "making all his tasks easy ones," and his wife Lynette for "being patient enough to allow him the time to pursue community- service activities." Olivier served as president of the Terrebonne Historical and Cultural Society from 1982 to 1996. Dr. Allen Ellender worked with Olivier in connection with the Southdown House Museum. "He served his country, Louisiana, his parish and the Terrebonne Historical and Cultural Society. It would not be what it is now if it had not been for him," Ellender said. "He took disagreeing board members and somehow got them working together on important projects." "He knew how to delegate, and he was calm, he never got riled up," said Ray Dill who also worked on museum projects with Olivier. Dill attributed the success of a project to turn the Southdown servants' quarters into a gift shop to Olivier's leadership. "I thought a lot of him. He never had a bad word for anybody." Jody Waggenspack, who worked with him on Southdown museum projects, recalls Olivier as "A wonderful, dear man, a real Southern gentleman." ======================== August 13. 2006 2:32AM Christian Olivier Jr. Picture ========== A photo is available for this file. Please go to http://www.rootsweb.com/%7eusgenweb/la/terrebonne/obits/2006/t0608.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== LAROSE - Edwin "To-Tut" Plaisance, owner of the Plaisance Vegetable Farm, spent his days caring for his crops and his family. And he was happiest, family members said, when his dual loves thrived. Plaisance, 87, died July 29 after suffering multiple strokes. Plaisance Vegetable Farm has been a family-owned farm for a several generations. Plaisance was raised on the farm, as were his children. According to Nolina Plaisance, Edwin's wife of 59 years, he worked hard on the farm, seldom taking time off. An avid churchgoer, he spent Sunday mornings at church and Sunday afternoons tending crops. Jenny Defelise, Edwin's sister, said he kept abreast of new gardening techniques as they developed and created hybrid vegetables. He was very picky about his insecticides to ensure his vegetables were protected from insects. Edwin liked the newspaper, Defelise said, because their mother took pleasure in reading it to them at home. It was a time when not everyone could read or write, she said, adding that Edwin's father's literacy was limited to his own name. Most young men left school to work on the farm, but Edwin was able to graduate high school. Hard work and chores always awaited the Plaisance siblings after school. Defelise said her father would trick the girls into working by telling them they only had to do a little, then kept adding on and adding on. Defelise recalled that the girls' main job was grinding corn and feeding the chickens. The farm consisted of some animals: pigs kept for winter slaughtering, mules to help plow and move equipment, cows and one horse that their mother refused to let them ride. In those days, a farmer provided housing for his workers. Nolina's father worked on the Plaisance Vegetable Farm, and her house was not far from Edwin's, with a few barns and fences in between. Defelise remembered the water pump that was near the fence guarding Nolina's house. Edwin would have to pump water for the mules, and he constantly jumped the fence to talk to her. "She was so beautiful then, and he was shy," Defelise said. Their romance blossomed after Edwin was discharged from the Army during World War II. He had served only three months in Virginia when he started having back problems. He refused back surgery in Virginia, probably because he was homesick, and was discharged. He had back surgery in New Orleans and stayed in a half-body cast about three months. In the hospital, Nolina visited him frequently. They were married not long after. Nolina said he was her only boyfriend, and she was his only girlfriend. The new couple lived in a small house Edwin's father built for them on the farm. Until then, the farm mainly produced sugar cane. Edwin's father grew vegetables for personal use. However, Edwin plowed his whole front yard and created a vegetable patch of his own. After his father's death, each sibling inherited a piece of land. Edwin decided vegetables were the way to go. Sugar cane was losing income, so he cut it down. Eventually, Edwin bought his sisters' land and owned the majority of the farm, but he and his brothers used to compete over who had the best harvest. All of his brothers persisted in farming, except Oneil Plaisance, who went to college after serving in World War II and became president of a bank. Nolina and Defelise agreed that Edwin always kept an eye out for what people wanted. When he was younger, Edwin would pick figs and take his father's car to sell them in the street. He picked and cleaned peanuts to be sold. Later he visited grocery stores to compare the quality and price of their produce to his. Plaisance Farms' produce was mainly sold in roadside stands. Edwin's son, Bobby Plaisance, took over the farm after his father's illnesses. Even though he was sick, he was still working. After his mother, brother and sister all experienced various types of cancer, Edwin was diagnosed with thyroid cancer a few years ago. Radiation, drug treatment and surgery sent the disease into remission. When Edwin started feeling sick again, Nolina said he assumed the cancer was returning and never had it checked out. He suffered two mild strokes that put him in the hospital. T here, a third stroke made him comatose, and a fourth was fatal. His family was able to celebrate his birthday one last time before Edwin was gone. Nolina said the whole family was there and they enjoyed homemade ice cream. ======================== August 14. 2006 3:25PM Bessie Touchard Bessie Frickey Touchard, 92, a native of Bayou Blue and resident of Des Allemands, died at 7:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, 2006. Please go to http://www.rootsweb.com/%7eusgenweb/la/terrebonne/obits/2006/t0608.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== CHAUVIN -- A lot of people wanted Barbara George. They wanted her to record R&B again; they wanted to interview her; and they wanted to send her to Europe for concerts. Media and other musicians would rush her in public, asking her where she'd been and if she was going to sing. But when it came down to it, George didn't want to fall into the rabbit hole of the music industry again, friends said. She'd seen the dishonesty and gone through the drug recovery. After living between Terrebonne Parish and New Orleans, she finally planted her roots more than 10 years ago in Chauvin, living by herself, family said. And she did sing again, but it was mostly at her church, Mt. Calvary Baptist, or in her home around family. George grew sick earlier this month from an infection in her lungs. Before that she'd been quietly fighting Hepatitis C, a liver disease, for more than 10 years, family said. A strong-willed woman, George never let others know how bad it was until the end, family said. After being released from Terrebonne General Medical Center earlier this month, her oldest of three sons, Tevin George, took her to Bossier City to stay with him. While millions of people knew her for her music in the 1960s, Barbara George passed away Aug. 10 in the company of family in Bossier City. Wednesday, on what would have been George's 64th birthday, the family gathered in Chauvin to celebrate h er life with prayer, praise and song. "Today is a day of joy 'cause we're sending my mama home," said Albert George, her second son. Outside the small brick Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, the congregation's songs floated through the air and down Bayou Petit Caillou. George fell in love with the word of God, said Pastor Roland Price. And when she sang, her soul was on fire. AN HONEST SINGER George's music career started early in life, when she began writing songs at 16 and singing in church at 17, said Gary Theroux, a music historian and former music editor for Reader's Digest She grew up in New Orleans' 9th Ward. That's where she met R&B legend Jessie Hill, said close friend Merline Kimble. In the summer of 1961, Hill helped George record her songs by introducing her to Harold Battiste, who had just set up the All For One record label. Battiste said he still remembers her untrained voice. "She sounded sincere, an honest singer," Battiste said. At 19, George's song "I Know (You Don't Love No More)" sat at the number one spot on Billboard magazine's R&B chart for four straight weeks in 1962. The artist she knocked out of the top spot was Ray Charles. She also saw her song climb to number three on Billboard's pop chart that year. George's cousin Linda Eubanks traveled with George for part of her career. She said she never knew who the song was about. The "you" could've been George's first husband, whom she married at 16, Eubanks said. It could've been her parents, who divorced and remarried twice. Or it could've been the friends she saw come and go. One thing is certain: The fame came hard and fast for George, and it left almost as quickly. "The sad part of her career, being a star was just too much for her," Battiste said. Eubanks became George's traveling companion at the beginning. The two toured the country as George performed in Chicago, Washington, D.C., Kentucky, Texas and at the Apollo Theater in New York City. Behind the scenes, however, George became influenced by drugs and alcohol. In the music business, people took advantage of George and stole money, her family said. Eubanks remembered her impression of this foreign lifestyle. "I didn't like that secular part of the world. After a while, it got to be too much for us country girls," she said. So when Eubanks' doubts about the music scene coincided with the death of her own mother, Eubanks stopped traveling with George and returned to south Louisiana. She kept a collection of her cousin's albums, awards and pictures in her Uptown New Orleans home. Hurricane Katrina's floodwaters covered everything in mold last year. "So, all that I have is memories," she said. George continued to record singles into the late '70s and early '80s, recording with the Sue and Hep' Me labels in New Orleans. But nothing ever topped or came close to the success of her first single, music historian Theroux said. SERVING GOD After George permanently left the music business, she devoted herself to serving God. And from that point on, George mostly sang and listened to gospel music. "When you were in the car with Barbara, you were listening to gospel," Kimble said. In 1996, she rededicated her life to God, said Vanessa George, her daughter-in- law. A devoted member of Mt. Calvary Baptist, George attended every church event, the Rev. Price said. She always asked if she could help and wouldn't take "no" for an answer. "I'd say, 'You don't have to do that.' She'd say, 'Pastor, don't stop me from receiving my blessing,' " Price remembered. A NEW ORLEANS LEGEND If you mention Barbara George's name or her song "I Know," any music expert can list the crowd she worked with in New Orleans and beyond: Fats Domino, Ernie K- Doe, Jessie Hill, Irma Thomas, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle. "She was very close with Ernie K-Doe. She used to babysit his kids," said Virgie George, her daughter-in-law. George sang "I Know" at K-Doe's funeral in 2001, Kimble said, and that was the last time George sang a secular song in public. George sang with the kind of unpolished voice that related to people, Theroux said. "She sounded like a real girl who lived down the street. It was a little bit off kilter, and it seemed that was the edge it needed." Like her voice, George's life was real, with real troubles and real joys, friends said. The pieces of her life are scattered among family, friends and fellow musicians. But no written history has ever detailed George's musical rise and fall and spiritual rebirth. Family and friends say George began writing an autobiography but don't know how far she got with it. Kimble said she tried to arrange interviews with writers and journalists, but George's waning health kept her from sharing her story. It's a shame that artists like George who come in and out of the spotlight quickly aren't written about as much as the long-term musicians, Theroux said. "Because once you know the story behind the song, you never hear it the same way," he said. ======================== August 17. 2006 12:59PM The Rev.
