Dufrene, a Raceland native, was a designer and draftsman for Cameco-John Deere Inc., a job he held for more than three decades. On Aug. 23, just a week after he retired to enjoy time with his family and his many hobbies, Dufrene suffered a heart attack and died. He was 57. Dufrene will long be remembered by his many friends and loving family as a man who loved life and a person who always took time to help others. He was also a car enthusiast who enjoyed restoring classics to their former glory and an avid motorcyclist. That hobby was evident by the number of collectible cars that filled the parking lot of the First Baptist Church of Raceland on the day of his funeral. Members of two different car clubs --Weekend Cruisers and the Patterson-based Wonderers -- were there to pay their respects to the man who shared their fascination with antique and collectible cars. Dufrene was a member of Weekend Cruisers and served as club president in 2000. It was through the car club that Gary and his wife Joetta made a lasting friendship with Larry and Darlene Freeman of Houma. The two couples meet at a club function in 1989. "We clicked right away," Larry Freeman said. "He had a way of convincing the rest of us to do things that we normally wouldn't have done." One of those things, Larry Freeman said, was entertaining their fellow car enthusiasts by dressing in costume and performing at charity events and fund- raisers. They would dress in costume and perform to songs. "We had a great thing going, it was fun," said Russell Arcement of Matthews, another car-club member. None of them actually sang, Arcement said, they just danced and lip-synced. Dufrene also performed as the King. "Gary was a natural as Elvis. He even looked like Elvis with long sideburns and really dark hair," Arcement said. Dufrene resembled Elvis already and once he was in costume the likeness was uncanny, Arecement said. The entertainers performed at local fairs, schools and nursing homes and for about eight years. Most of the time they did so to raise money for a school or the Shriners, a fraternal organization that provides free medical care to children who have been burned. Every Christmas they entertained the Raceland Manor residents. They would start with a drum roll and then Elvis would run out with his bodyguard, played by Freeman. Darlene Freeman played the part of Ann Margaret and Joetta was part of his entourage. The seniors loved it, Freeman said, and looked forward to it every year. Gary Dufrene especially enjoyed the show, said Darlene Freeman, because it made him happy to perform for the residents. Dufrene was also known as a talented painter of automobiles and motorcycles. He restored many antique and classic cars in his spare time. "Gary was gifted, he was a master at his talent of molding and painting cars," said Larry Freeman. "I always admired and envied what he was able to do." To celebrate Gary Dufrene's love of classic cars and his willingness to help others, a car show will be held this weekend in his honor. Cruise Night is set for Saturday in the parking lot of Wal-Mart, 1633 Martin Luther King Blvd., Houma. Organizers said the event will serve as a fund-raiser for MacDonnell United Methodist Children's Services, a safe haven for abandoned and neglected and children. It's also a tribute to a good friend, husband, son and father. Remembering celebrates the lives of people in Terrebonne or Lafourche parishes who have recently passed away.
