Please go to http://www.rootsweb.com/%7eusgenweb/la/terrebonne/obits/2006/t0609.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== HOUMA -- The seven decades Alphonse Joseph Authement Jr. lived in Grand Caillou were dedicated to the needs of his neighbors. A businessman and community leader, Authement -- who was known to many by A.J. or Junior -- died of heart failure Thursday at Terrebonne General Medical Center. He was 72. Most of Authement's life was spent catering to the community around him, first working at his father's general store and then as a business owner in his own right. He also dedicated his time to serving on a handful of boards and commissions including the Houma-Terrebonne Airport Commission. He was also a founding member of the Grand Caillou Volunteer Fire Department. Despite his almost constant involvement with the community, his family said Authement never wanted to be in the spotlight. "He was very humble," said his daughter Carletta Dunne. "He gave discretely." A Grand Caillou native, Authement attended Grand Caillou Elementary School before he was sent to a boarding school in New Orleans because his father "wanted to get some rest," his family laughed. Authement graduated from Terrebonne High School in 1958, after having already earned a business degree from Soulé Business College in New Orleans. The budding businessman met his wife of 55 years, Verlin, at local dances. While it wasn't love at first site for Verlin, 70, Authement wouldn't give up. His persistence eventually won her over. "He chased her until she caught him," Dunne said. Over the five decades the couple were married, they raised four daughters - Dunne, Suzette DeHart, Sebrina Scurlock and Katrina Fornof. Authement's community involvement began when he started working for his father at the family business, A.J. Authement Co. Inc., a general store that sold a variety of items, including fresh food and shoes. "At that time, people didn't have cars to run into town to get things," Dunne said. Soon the general store became a social hub for the bayou community, with many residents coming in and asking Authement's advice on many things -- including who to vote for in upcoming elections. Being the only man in the house was a dream come true for Authement, Dunne said. "He was in heaven. He had his entourage." Authement eventually took over the business from his father, running it until it closed in 1972. Once the store closed, Authement started a new venture: working in the shrimp- packing business. In the mid-1980s, Authement went into business for himself and opened Gulf Breeze Seafood Inc. in Dulac, a seafood-processing business. His family said he sold his products to wholesalers in New Orleans, later branching out by buying his own oyster beds and boats. The family worked together at whatever business Authement owned at the time, and Verlin, their daughters agreed, was always there to lend her support. Authement retired in 2002 after Hurricane Lili's floodwaters ruined his business, his family said. "We would have had to start off new," Verlin said. "He decided he was too old to do that." Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Authement was on several local boards and commissions. He was a founding member of the Grand Caillou Volunteer Fire Department, served for more than a decade on the Houma-Terrebonne Airport Commission, and served on the Grand Caillou Recreation Center board. He also served on the advisory board of the former First National Bank of Houma in Dulac until the bank -- which is now Whitney Bank -- closed. Authement also served two terms as a police juror for the Grand Caillou area. Police jurors were replaced by council members when Terrebonne Parish switched forms of government in the early 1980s. During his time as a police juror, Authement oversaw several projects important to his community, his family said. Those projects included building several bridges -- including the Buquet and Dulac bridges -- and a handful of pump stations. Authement was also involved with a committee that oversaw the purchase of the property Terrebonne General Medical Center now occupies. For those efforts, his name is engraved on a plaque in the hospital, Verlin said. Throughout his life, Authement was also heavily involved at Holy Family Catholic Church and its related organizations. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul Society and Holy Name Society. He also chaired seve ral church fairs when those events were held annually in Grand Caillou. Authement's hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening and entertaining friends and family. "He loved entertaining," said DeHart. "He was happiest when entertaining." Family also noted how much he loved his six grandchildren and six great- grandchildren, often taking the family on trips in his recreational vehicle. Authement's death left a void in the close-knit family, who say they are going to miss him. They also say Grand Caillou lost one of its pillars this weekend. "He did a lot for the community," Dunne said. "It's important that the community realize how much he loved them."
