Please go to http://www.rootsweb.com/%7eusgenweb/la/terrebonne/obits/2006/t0610.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== THIBODAUX -- Clarence Ford, who for two decades worked as a bartender and unofficial storyteller at downtown Thibodaux's Maronge Bar, died Wednesday. The cause was complications from emphysema, said bar owner Larry Maronge. A lifelong Thibodaux resident who celebrated his 75th birthday this month, Ford is remembered by denizens of the downtown gathering spot -- mostly retirees who arrive midmorning to play cards, sip beer, eat ham sandwiches and talk politics as a character who stood out in a place that attracted plenty of interesting personalities. "He had the knack," Maronge said Thursday, pulling out a photo of his friend from behind the bar to show a visitor. "That's why he stayed here so long. He was a phenomenal person with jokes. He had an excellent sense of humor." Lance Ford, one of Clarence's five children, described his father as a raconteur who was especially given to telling Boudreaux and Thibodeaux jokes. Clarence Ford started working part-time at the bar about 20 years ago, his son said, even before retiring from a job with Freeport MacMoran Sulfur that took him offshore for extended periods. In his retirement, he started spending more time at the bar, Lance Ford said, because "he just couldn't stay at home." The bar was a place where he could socialize with friends, play cards and drink beer, Clarence Ford's younger brother, Luke, said. At the bar, he said, his brother knew just about everyone who walked in. "He was a cat," said Ronald "Ren" Oncale, who said he had known Ford and his family for years. "Every time I saw him, he had a different joke for me. He always made you laugh." Ford gave up his bar job about a year ago, Maronge said, when the effects of his disease grew particularly pronounced. "He got to the point where he couldn't walk from (the bar) to the door without stopping to rest," he said. Funeral services were Friday, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Clarence Ford is survived by his wife, Louise Fakier Ford; daughter, Claire Lee; sons, Craig, Chris, Lenny and Lance; and brother, Luke Ford, all of Thibodaux. ======================== October 28. 2006 12:55AM Earl Young Picture ========== A photo is available for this file. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with burial in Morgan City Cemetery with full military honors given by the East St. Mary Veteran Funeral Squad. He is survived by one son, Kenneth Jeffus of Thibodaux; two daughters, Connie Jeffus of Grapevine, Texas, and Kate Jeffus of New York; one brother, Worth Jeffus and wife, Winnie, of Guymon, Okla.; one granddaughter, Jennifer Jeffus Lauterbach and husband, Kenny; two great-granddaughter twins, Esther and Clare Lauterbach, of Brooklyn; others for whom he had special feelings are, Rita White from Morgan City, Dr. Kay Jordan of New Orleans and Phyllis Greenblatt of Baton Rouge; one niece, Joan Jeffus Connelly and family of Valencia, Calif.; and one nephew, Larry Jeffus and family of Guymon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Levy Jeffus; and one son, Jean B. Jeffus Jr. He was one of the first graduates in civil engineering at Texas Tech. He met his wife, Eleanor Levy, of Morgan City in 1936, while working with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers on the flood-control systems on the Atchafalaya Basin, constructing the first seawalls in Morgan City and Berwick. From 1942 to 1946 during World War II, he served in the Construction Battalions (Seabees) in the Aleutian Islands, and in the Pacific during the final battles of the war. He participated in the landings in Iwo Jima and was sent to Tokyo immediately after the occupation of Japan, where he was decommissioned at the rank of Lieutenant. He was proud of his military service and that his birthday in May 30, 1913, became designated as Memorial Day. He served as post commander in Plainview and district commander in the Amarillo VFW in Texas. He returned to Plainview in 1946, took up farming and used his surveying skills to help other farmers set up contour irrigation systems when water became available for farming in the Texas Panhandle. Nonetheless, the manual irrigation systems and demanding life of farming, as well as his and his wife's attachment to southern Louisiana, caused him to return to his career in engineering and in 1957 he and his family came back to Morgan City, beginning a longtime residence. He joined the firm of Brown and Root, eventually working his way up to general manager, until the time the yard was closed. He then worked on international assignments for Halliburton, including the eastern leg of the trans-South American pipeline and the submarine depot in Iran until his retirement, which was precipitated when the Shah was deposed in 1979. Some interludes away from Morgan City only made him want to return permanently to Morgan City, where he lived until finally being forced away by hurricane evacuations and their aftermath in 2004, living in Houma for the past two years. During that time he enjoyed visits in Houma and Baton Rouge with his great- granddaughter twins, who were born in August of 2004. His family is very happy that in May of this year, he was treated to a get- together with former colleagues at Brown and Root, as well as a mini family reunion on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to your favorite charity or because of the significance to his life, to the hurricane/flood relief funds or research for Parkinson's Disease and/or Macular Degeneration. Twin City Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. ======================== October 31. 2006 12:48PM Marie Pertuit Marie Degruise Pertuit, 93, a native and resident of Raceland, died at 3:15 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006.
