Please go to http://www.rootsweb.com/%7eusgenweb/la/terrebonne/obits/2007/t0701.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== HOUMA -- She rode a pirogue to grade school, struggled to find work during the Great Depression and met her husband on a New Orleans bus, but throughout all the twists and turns of Olive Thibodaux's life, she stayed true to her own values, ones that set her apart from many and made her footsteps tough to follow. Thibodaux, 99, died suddenly on Christmas Eve at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, leaving her family saddened but proud to have been a part of the hard- working, self-educated and accomplished woman's life. "She was a self-made woman who loved life," said Thibodaux's daughter, Addie Kearns. "She loved people, and she loved God. She went to Mass every day." Many in the community knew Thibodaux because of her role as funeral director at Thibodaux Funeral Home, which she and her husband, Addie Thibodaux, founded more than 50 years ago, said the couple's granddaughter, Roxanne Dill. The two were both from Theriot and had met before, but became a couple in New Orleans where they'd gone to find work during the Depression. "When she went to get on a city bus the door opened, and there was Addie Thibodaux," Kearns said. The two married in 1930, lived the next several years in New Orleans and moved to Houma in 1936, where Addie Thibodaux's brother-in-law, Clifford Chauvin, owner of Chauvin Funeral Home, asked him to work at the business. In 1945, the Thibodauxs moved to Thibodaux and opened a funeral home there, living on the third floor for many years. They operated it until Addie's death in 1969, when Olive sold the successful business and moved on to another phase in her life, Kearns said. The couple's 39-year-union produced two children, one of whom died in infancy, five grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and yielded many happy days fishing at their Grand Isle camp. The two also earned a local reputation as formidable ballroom dancers. "She was kind of no-nonsense sometimes, but I think that she could be what the occasion demanded. She was appropriate for every occasion," Dill said. Olive and Addie did their share of traveling while he was alive, but following her husband's death, Olive took on the world. She was one of the first tourists to visit China after the Communist party allowed visitors, she was in earthquakes in Mexico, rode a water buffalo in Indonesia (at the age of 78) and visited the Virgin Islands, Japan and Hawaii, said Dill, 51. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren called her "Tootsie," a name she'd requested in order to avoid the traditional maw-maw, Dill added. Olive's interests and talents ran the gamut -- and if there was something she didn't know how to do, chances are she'd take a class and learn how. She was a gardener; winning a number of local awards, took oil-painting classes to learn how to paint her own flower arrangements and often had a house full of guests. Her cooking was second to none, Dill said. "She was such a good cook that it ruined us forever in going to any kind of fancy restaurant," Dill said. "She could take any piece of food and make it gourmet. She would get a recipe and try anything ... any Cajun food, she was expert at it." One of nine children, Olive learned the value of hard work early and put it to use everywhere, like switching from her native French to English for the first time in grade school and sewing her daughter's clothes when she was young, Dill said. "Anything she could learn how to do or learn how to do it better, she did it," she said. ======================== January 04. 2007 1:16PM Nancy Vito Picture ========== A photo is available for this file. Ernest, as he was known, was 95 years old and was in remarkable health until last year when a series of illnesses just took their toll on him. He lived a great life and loved life to the fullest. He was the strong, silent type of man who was always ready to help family as well as friends. Ernest was born in Plaucheville on March 15, 1911. Shortly after that his family relocated to New Orleans for several years. Then, they relocated again to Avoilles Parish. They were there for the devastating flood of 1927 and lost everything. They then moved back to New Orleans. Ernest came to Houma in the early 1930s and worked as a mechanic on inland boats. In the 1940s he had St. Romain's Plumbing and ran galvanized pipe for natural gas in many homes during that era. He also was an accomplished carpenter. There was little that he couldn't do. He is most remembered by Houma residents as the Electrolux Vacuum Cleaner man. He sold and repaired Electrolux vacuums for decades. He met his first loving wife, Pearl Lirette, of 45 years in Little Caillou. They had four children and he is survived by three, including two daughters, Emilie Morales and long time companion, Paul Weyl, and Nelva and husband, Tommy Daigle; and one son, Martin St. Romain and wife, Linda, He was preceded in death by one daughter, Faye Webre. Pearl died in 1982. He also is survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his family, neighbors and friends as he was so close to all of them and was affectionately called PaPa by most. He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 15 years, Lucy Chataliner Toups; and her children, Nancy Capps, Nellie Brashear, John "T-Boy" Toups, Richard and Russel Toups, Bonnie and husband, Jerry Craft, Katie and husband, Ken Parisean, and Rachel and husband, Johnny Roussell. They all loved him as a dad and were by his side till his death. Lucy and Ernest were a wonderful loving couple and took care of each other on a daily basis. They always had a smile and a good story to tell. He will be dearly missed by the Toups family and their dear friends. Ernest was a devout Catholic for many years and was a member of the Knights of Columbus for decades. However, when he and Lucy were married he felt more comfortable with her church. They were members of the Assembly of God Church on Howard Avenue. At one time, Ernest sang in the church choir. Ernest was the last survivor of his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Martin Eugene St. Romain and Irma Saucier St. Romain; two brothers, Lloyd and Durwood; five sisters, Nettie Lemoine, Ola Coco, Effie Easling, Rosina Marcelle and Sedonia Badeaux. Locally, he also is survived by sister Rosina's daughter Irma and husband, Buddy Marcello. Ernest barely escaped death at the age of 5. In fact, he was pronounced dead. On his first day of school in New Orleans, while getting dressed in front of the fireplace, the iron arm supporting a pot of boiling water broke loose from its mounting. The large pot crashing to the old wooden floor, the boiling water drenched Ernest and at the time was thought to have scalded him to death. He was wrapped in a sheet and brought to his bed leaving his scalded flesh embedded in the floor. He laid there lifeless as his mother awaited the local doctor. The doctor came, and said there was nothing that he could do, and pronounced him dead. Funerals back them came quick as there was no embalming. Two things saved him from buried alive that day. His mother insisted that his final services include a Catholic Mass and the next Mass was at 7 a.m. the next morning. The second thing was that a child's coffin would have to be built. As he laid in bed lifeless, he was hanging o n to life. Later that night, when the doctor and priest came over to do a final blessing and console the family, they prayed over Ernest. He then began to moan, for he was not dead but in deep shock, something they didn't know about in 1916. A blessed man he was and a long and blessed life he lived. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to funeral time Monday at Chauvin Funeral Home. Religious services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel, with burial in St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2. And they are what hundreds who mourn Tiffany Neil remember as they try to come to grips with the 38-year-old Houma woman's Monday morning death. Neil suffered a lower brain-stem stroke on Dec. 30, just before her husband, Ryan Neil, found her unconscious on the bathroom floor. She woke disoriented and unable to speak, and Ryan rushed her to the emergency room at Terrebonne General Medical Center, a place Tiffany considered a second home: she'd been captain of hospital security for 18 years. The scope of Tiffany's influence on people was evident even as she lay on her deathbed. Nearly 200 people attended a rosary service to pray for the afflicted woman while she was in the hospital, and Friday night, about 90 people arrived at her friend Jane Lirette's house for a Mass to celebrate Tiffany. "People did cry, but it was more like a ėThank you God for her life,' " Lirette said. Paula Miller, another friend, said although Tiffany couldn't have known, she caused many of the people she knew to grow spiritually and draw closer to their families because of her illness and death. "She was so beautiful, from the second it happened, she touched more people's lives, she did not know how big of an impact she was going to make the last nine days of her life," Miller said. "She's going to be so sadly missed." Tiffany's longtime friend Kelly Weaver agreed. "When everything happened, it made you realize what was important in your life. It got a lot of people together that hadn't seen each other in a while," she said. "Working at the hospital, she touched so many people. She was a giver, she wasn't just a security guard. If anyone needed anything at the hospital, she was there." Tiffany's decline was alarmingly rapid -- the day after her stroke complications prompted doctors to put her in a medically-induced coma, a state she stayed in till Friday. "It didn't look good from the beginning," Ryan, 40, said. Doctors revived her on Friday, but she couldn't speak. She blinked her eyes in response to visitors' questions. "It was probably the most miserable thing you've ever seen, it really was," her husband said. "We could see she wasn't getting better. The doctors said it was a non-recoverable stroke." Tiffany's brain continued to bleed, and by Monday, knowing of her desire not be sustained by machines, family members decided to disconnect a ventilator. "That was way past the hardest thing I've ever done," Ryan said, speaking slowly but steadily Tuesday afternoon. He said the shock hasn't hit home yet for Lillie, 6, and Lauren, 9, the couple's daughters, but he has confronted head-on the sudden loss of his wife of 13 years, who before the stroke, had enjoyed almost perfect health. A bout with a virus several days before she collapsed left her dehydrated, something doctors said may have contributed to the bleeding in her brain, her husband said. "She has been the love of my life for the last 19 years," said Ryan. "Not waking up with her, not hearing her fuss at me for doing things, her smile, her being so happy all time" wondering aloud how he'd cope in the absence of those things. Kim Chauvin, who called Tiffany her "dearest friend", started an e-mail campaign to churches with online prayer chains. The pleas for prayers were sent around the country as soon as Chauvin learned of Tiffany's stroke. Chauvin also alerted members of the South Terrebonne High class of 1986. She and Tiffany, both members of the school's student government, graduated that year, and worked together ever since organizing the reunions. Dale Prosperie, who served as class president, recalled Tiffany as the "backbone" of the class get-togethers. "Nobody ever had anything bad to say about her. She kept groups of friends together. She was always the common thread," he said. "She had a laugh that is absolutely like no other, most of the time you weren't laughing at a joke, you were laughing because she was laughing," Chauvin said. "She was a very vibrant, very friendly, very outgoing person. She talked your ear off, but I'd give anything to hear her voice again." Tiffany took pains to support her friends, Lirette said. "She was true to her faith, exactly what Jesus did, she lived like that. If she said she was going to do something she would actually follow through. I think she was just genuine." Visitation is from 5 to 9:30 p.m. today at Chauvin Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. to funeral time Thursday at Annunziata Catholic Church.
