He attended Lorton Preparatory School beginning at the age of 3. Two years prior to graduation, he transferred to Western Military Academy in Alton, Ill., where he received his high-school diploma. He then attended Louisiana State University and Tulane University undergraduate schools and graduated from Tulane Medical School in 1945. He completed a combined residency in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiology at Charity Hospital in New Orleans through LSU and Tulane medical schools. After World War II, he was selected to serve for a year in residency at the reopening of the American Hospital in Paris. Subsequently, he served in the Navy during the Korean War as senior medical officer on board the Admiral's flagship, The Albany, of the Atlantic fleet. In 1954, he returned to Houma to start his practice. Over the course of his career, he was instrumental in founding the Heart Station, Intensive Care and Respiratory Therapy Units at Terrebonne General Hospital. She is survived by two daughters, Judy Thorne and husband, Mike Musick, of Reston, Va., and Jane Jackson and husband, Bill, of Oxford, Ohio; two grandsons, Tim and Chris Jackson; one niece, Paula Jameson of Arlington, Va.; one nephew, Rick Jameson and wife, Mary, of Houma; and her husband's cousin, Audrey Reich of New Orleans. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Guz Zimmerman, former secretary-treasurer of the Lafourche Parish Police Jury. She began teaching kindergarten at age 18 at the Gentilly Terrace School, after completing a normal school curriculum. She subsequently received her degree in education from Tulane's University College. She returned to teaching, substituting initially at Schriever School, after the birth of her daughters. Most of her career was spent in the Thibodaux public-school system, teaching history and math at the upper elementary and junior high level. She was active in various teachers groups, including ADK and received a master's in education from Nicholls State University. She met her husband at a Lutheran church camp and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Thibodaux for 60 years where she taught Sunday school, participated in Women of the Church and served on the board of elders. She was also active in ecumenical affairs including World Day of Prayer. She was a teacher and churchwoman and was active in a host of other social groups, serving as a Girl Scout leader in the 1950s, a hospital volunteer during her retirement and a charter member of TaWaSi, where for a number of years she was treasurer of their annual antiques show.
