Please go to http://www.rootsweb.com/%7eusgenweb/la/terrebonne/obits/2007/t0703.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== GALLIANO -- At South Lafourche High, a 35-year-old science teacher's death Wednesday has spread sorrow across a campus where many counted him as family. Michael St. Pierre died en route to a New Orleans hospital of complications related to congestive-heart failure, friends and relatives said. "The whole place is crying," teacher Janet Bowman said. During his 12 years as a teacher at the school, and a student there before, St. Pierre developed a reputation as an uncommonly giving man who dedicated his life to helping others. A number of staff members first came to know St. Pierre in childhood, when he attended faculty events and traipsed through the school's halls with his parents, both employed at South Lafourche High. "We were kind of all his aunts and uncles," said Bowman, who has worked for 37 years at the school and who once taught St. Pierre chemistry. "Michael essentially grew up here at school." As a child, St. Pierre favored academic to athletic pursuits, dabbling in computers beginning in fourth grade and developing an early love of reading and writing, his mother, Louise St. Pierre, said. Teaching, she said, was not his first choice of professions. Based in part on his lifelong struggle with health problems, St. Pierre initially intended to become a nurse, his mother said. He fell into education - an area in which he went on to earn his master's degree -- because the nursing program was overcrowded. He was, it turns out, a natural. St. Pierre taught chemistry, physical science and a computer-repairs course of his own design. Fellow teachers said his love of his job and caring nature often kept him at work well after hours. "He was a good counselor," said teacher Tommy Becnel, who once taught St. Pierre biology and who more recently helped him develop his computer programs. "Students felt comfortable if they had a problem talking to him." Louise St. Pierre said her son often spent weekends tutoring students at area bookstores and coffee shops. "He never charged a dime," she said. Becnel said St. Pierre set up computer labs in classrooms, stocked with obsolete equipment donated by the state. He traveled to Baton Rouge to pick up the devices and refurbished them himself. This fall, St. Pierre was given an Unsung Hero's Award for his work with the school's computer programs; it came with a $7,000 grant to continue his work, Principal Mary Curole said. Once a week, he made the hour-long drive to Thibodaux for his volunteer job as an advisor to members of the Kappa Alpha fraternity at Nicholls State University. An alumnus of the fraternity, St. Pierre was particularly interested in ensuring active members kept up their grades and completed their community service, said Michael Matherne, a fraternity brother of St. Pierre's who now works at Nicholls. "The students absolutely loved him," Matherne said. At a fraternity meeting held this week, he said, "they told wonderful stories about Mike for 90 minutes." Before his death Wednesday, Louise St. Pierre said, her son was asked if he wished to donate his organs. Unsurprisingly, he accepted. "They were able to use his eyes," his mother said. "He's gonna help people see again because of that." ======================== March 03. 2007 Clyde Tucker Sr. Clyde Rupert Tucker Sr., 78, a native and resident of Baton Rouge and a former resident of Shreveport, died Friday, March 2, 2007.
