Dies Terrebonne Priest Dies suddenly at Grand Coteau A beautiful life came to an untimely close yesterday when Reverend E. A. Fields, S. J., died suddenly at St. Charles Novitiate, Grand Coteau. Father Fields, a native of Montegut was ordained to the priesthood at Woodstock, Md., June 28, 1904. At the time of his ordination his invalid father was unable to attend mass so Father Fields was given the unusual privilege of celebrating the Holy Sacrifice at the Fields home in Montegut so that his first mass in his native town was said, not in church, but in his father's bedroom. Father Fields was one of the shining lights of the Jesuit order. Vice President of Loyola, President of St. Charles College, Galveston, pastor of Sacred Heart church, Grand Coteau and other posts filled by him at different times in his life. The deceased is well-known here, in Montegut and in Bourg. Last April he visited Terrebonne relatives and was highly pleased at the many improvements since his boyhood days. Father Fields was born in Montegut in 1879, where his father, E. P. Fields owned a large sugar plantation and factory. After completing his first studies at the Montegut public school, he entered St. Charles College where he studied for three years. He then entered the business world serving as salesman for a store in Bourg. Giving up a promising business career, he entered the Jesuit order and after studying at Mobile, Ala., and Woodstock, Md., he was elevated to the priesthood by Cardinal Gibbons. Beloved by all who knew him, Father Fields, the last remaining member of the ten Fields children, leaves to mourn his loss many nieces and nephews and a half sister, Mrs. Harry Klingmam of Montegut. Speaking of Father Fields this morning at her home on Lafayette street Miss Ruby Fields, said that just last week he wrote her a long interesting letter. "I never imagined it would be Uncle Eli's last letter," she said. "He wrote he was feeling so much better than usual." Funeral services for Father Fields will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Charles College, Grand Coteau. Interment will be in the Jesuit cemetery there. =========================================== E. A. FIELDS The Houma Times Saturday, June 20, 1942, page 1 col. 2 Father Fields, S. J.
