Mays (1814 - 1866), Union Parish Louisiana From "A History of the Baptists of Louisiana From The Earliest Times to the Present", by Rev. W. E. Paxton, C. R. Barnes Publishing Co., St. Louis, 1888. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== [pages 500-501] ELDER JOHN L. MAYS. -- Of this good man it may be said that, though he is dead, he yet speaketh. The scene of his labors was the western part of Union Parish and eastern part of Claiborne. Most of the churches in this region were either gathered or strengthened by his labors. He was born in 1814. He came from Arkansas, as an ordained minister, in the year 1845, and settled in Union Parish, where he began his successful labors. He was exceedingly zealous, and often expressed the wish that he might die in the pulpit. This desire was fulfilled. While preaching with unusual fervor, Nov. 18, 1866, he was seized with heart disease, and expired in a few minutes, before he could be removed to the house of a friend. ############################################################# File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/union/bios/mays-john-l.txt
