Spurlock and Jane Goin Spurlock Source: "A Book of Favorite Recipes" Compiled by the Decendants of John William and Martha Grace Spurlock. ================================================================================== In the early 1880's John Thomas Spurlock married Jane Goin in Jasper County. To the union were born eight children: John William, who married Martha Grace Jones; Texas Alabama (Bama), who married Tom C. Crawford; Pearl; Beulah; Jeff; Edward who married Kate Carroll; Ellis, who married Pearl Elkins, and Margaret (Mag), who married E.A. Robinson. The family left Alabama journeying to Texas to settle. While traveling through Mississippi, the family had to stop for the birth of a child. This daughter was named Texas Alabama because of the journey they were undertaking. We know this child as "Aunt Bama". Traveling along with the J.T. Spurlock family was a brother, Jack Spurlock who went on to Texas where it was heard that he settled in the Greenville, Texas area. To our knowledge, the family was never heard from again, although many Spurlocks are listed in the telephone directory in many Texas towns and cities. After most of the J.T. Spurlock children were grown the family moved on to Louisiana in the late 1880's where they settled in the Bethel Community, never consummating the trip to Texas. Four of the children, John William, Edward, Ellis and Margaret, remained in the Bethel community and reared families. The other three children Pearl, Beulah, and Jeff died before marrying. The Family was active in Church at Mt. Nebo Church then at Bethel Church after it was built since it was nearer their homeplace and travel was very limited. John Thomas Spurlock participated in Church activities by performing funeral services when the pastor was not "in town" as well as leading the congregational singing. ###############################################################
