PULLEN-SPENCER CEMETERY, near Spencer, Union Parish Louisiana Submitted for the Union Parish Louisiana USGenWeb Archives by Larry & Mary Anne Williams, 7/8/2005 ************************************************ Copyright. File formatted by Karen Mabry Rice. ===================================================================================================== ===================================================================================================== This cemetery is located off Arkansas Road about 3 miles from Spencer. It is located a distance off the road on the old Spencer home place. It was in very bad shape and the gate at the entrance was lying on the ground. The sign at the top of the gate only said "Pullen Cemetery," but there were both Pullens and Spencers buried there. Most of the residents here refer to it as Pullen-Spencer or Spencer-Pullen. The cemetery had once been maintained by descendants of the family. Mr. Cona Spillers had been helping to maintain the cemetery and keeping it clean. He was a long-time member of the Union Parish Police Jury, and he remembers years ago when a road had to be made into the cemetery to bury Mamie & Lafayette Pullen. The cemetery had grown up since the last time Mr. Spillers had been there, but he and his son cleared the sawbrier vines and tree limbs so that we could locate the 7 marked graves. ===================================================================================================== ===================================================================================================== Note: Surveyed with the assistance of Ron Spillers and his father, Cona Spillers. Thanks to them for showing us this cemetery which had eluded us for the past year. Without their help and assistance, we would have never located this one. They told us that the cemetery had been located on the old Spencer Place. The homeplace had been located to the north of the cemetery. They also told us that Arkansas Road was the road which many people took after they landed on the Ouachita River at Ouachita City and travelled to Arkansas. At that time (the mid 1800s) Louisiana Highway 143 was not there, and this was the only road that led to Arkansas. The road is partially paved on each end, but is basically sand and some gravel. It is in very bad shape and is almost impassable in the winter months or after a big rainfall. It has been used for logging and hauling dirt the last few months, and this has added to the deterioration of the road. ===================================================================================================== ===================================================================================================== LAST FIRST MID.
