SPRINGHILL CEMETERY - Caucasian section, Union Parish Louisiana near the Arkansas line Submitted for the Union Parish Louisiana USGenWeb Archives by Harold & Lynda Phillips, 10/2000 ................................................................................. ************************************************ Copyright. Highways 549 and 551 meet at Oakland. Marion is 10 miles from Oakland on Hwy 551 and 18 miles to Farmerville on Hwy 549 and 15. It is 1 mile to the Arkansas Line and 7 miles to Strong Arkansas on Hwy 549. From Farmerville you go North on Hwy 15 for about 2 miles and go east on Hwy 549 through Conway and Truxno. From Marion, Hwy 33 is the Main Street. Go to the west side of town and Hwy 551 will go north to Oakland. At Oakland where four roads come together, the Springhill Rd is marked with a sign that will go west from Oakland. It will take you to the cemetery which is about two miles on the left. The cemetery will be in two parts. Originally there were two Springhill Baptist Churches at this location, one for African Americans and one for White and the cemeteries were together but separated by a cross fence. The African American Church can be seen from the cemetery, but the white church moved closer to Oakland in the late 1800 or early 1900 and is on Hwy 551. Both churches are active. Before power mowers, the people in the community would meet at least twice a year to clean the cemetery. The men would scrap the cemetery with hoes and dump the grass out back of the cemetery. The ladies would show up later with all kinds of food for lunch. During lunch they all visited and remembered the ones they knew that were buried there. They often spoke of things that were funny that happened during their lifetime. Mr. Charley Murphy of Murphy Oil Co.at Eldorado Ark. had relatives in the cemetery and enjoyed the fellowship, so he made every one of these gatherings possible. In the mid Forty's the community decided to quit scraping the grass and start mowing. They had often discussed people that were buried in there that had no marker. Every one contacted their relatives and friends that had lived in the area, to see if they could help with a list. Mr. Murphy liked the idea of a monument dedicated to the pioneers of Oakland and all buried in the cemetery at the time. So there is a nice monument there with a list of pioneers and a list of those buried there at the time of the monument. Also the markers with no dates are markers put down at the time of the monument for the ones the community remembered to be buried there that had no marker. Hudson, 7/2004: Rev. George Everett arrived in the Springhill community in late 1847 following the death of his first wife in Perry County Alabama. He founded the Springhill Baptist Church in 1848 and preached in many Baptist Churches in Union County Arkansas and Union Parish Louisiana. His marker in the Springhill Cemetery stood until 1984, when it broke at the base. I recorded the information from the marker in 1982 or 1983, while it was still standing. I hope to one day replace this marker, as the original (broken) one has now disappeared. It read: Rev. George Everett Born in Rockingham Co. N.C. June 23d 1798, Ordained to the Gospel Ministry in the Oakmulgee Baptist Church Perry Co. Ala. Sept. 30th 1831, Departed this life in Union Co. Ark. June 25th 1855, Aged 57 Years & 2 Days. And for nearly twenty four years a faithful Minister of Jesus Christ. Gone home to that eternal rest. That awaits the people of God. There to be forever blest. In that glorious abode.
