The cemetery is named after David Ward (1806-1882), and originated as his private family graveyard on property he purchased from the government in December 1837. The earliest person buried in the cemetery is likely Ward's father, Elisha Ward, Sr. (21 Feb 1773-5 Aug 1838). Soon after settling there, David Ward participated in the founding of a Methodist Protestant Church beside his family graveyard. The church chose the name of 'Ward's Chapel Church', and Ward's family graveyard had become the church and local community cemetery by the mid-1840s. The Methodist Protestant Church existed at this location until the 1870s or 1880s. At that time, it became a Church of Christ, which it remains until today. Ward's Chapel is a very old community graveyard with almost half of the tombstones dating back from mid-to-late 1800s. The rows are not numbered and are notvery straight. Ninety-seven gravesites are recorded in rows from front to back, starting at the front gate. In the mid-1900s, several Ham graves collapsed and the bones became visable. Citizens reburied the bones without an inscription. The survey of this cemetery was completed on November 5, 1999 and compiled by Mary Davis-Odom. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ROW JENNINGS, James C........Nov 17,1918 - Mar 1, 1998 ** JENNINGS, Florence Loreace ...Mar 3, 1919 - UNKNOWN....metal grave marker, very old and rusty, unreadable ROAN, Eliga ..........1826 - 1896 ROAN, Sarah (Sally) Rabun ...1840 - Feb, 1912 ROW OLIPHANT, William Douglas ..Mar 24, 1908 - Aug 31, 1989 ** OLIPHANT, D.
