Hudson in 1993. This information was published in the mid-1990s in "The Genie", the publication of the Ark-La-Tex Genealogical Association. Data re-formatted for the Union Parish Louisiana USGenWeb Archives in August 2009 by T. D. Hudson. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== INTRODUCTION The United States censuses taken between 1850 and 1880 consisted of a number of different parts called "schedules". What we normally refer to as "the census" is technically termed the "Population Schedule". The census enumerators also recorded data about farms in the "Agricultural Schedule" and about industrial production in the "Manufacturing Schedule." In 1850 and 1860, they recorded the names of slaveowners in the "Slave Schedule." The final schedule of this period was the "Mortality Schedule," which the government intended as a record of all those who died in the year preceding "census day", which at that time was June 1. Below I have transcribed from the original microfilmed census records all information from the 1850 Union Parish Mortality Schedule. The 1850 enumerator for Union Parish, George A. Hammonds, actually failed to carefully follow his directions when recording the Mortality Schedule. In that era, United States government considered slaves as mere chattel property, and never recorded their names on federal census records. However, Hammonds recorded the given names of all slaves who had died between 1 June 1849 and 31 May 1850. He also recorded surnames for many of them, presumably the surnames of their owners. By his mistake, Hammonds left a permanent record of the deaths of these human beings who would otherwise be entirely lost to history. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== Transcriptions begin here ================================================================================== ================================================================================== --- Year: 1850 State: Louisiana County: Union Page No: 728 Reel no: Enumerated by: George A. The small pox extended over a large portion of the Parish but did not prove fatal in but few instances. The cholera was confined entirely to the immigrants and persons living on the OUachita river. The land is of a light grey color with a sandy foundation and very much broken, but is well adapted to raising cotton and corn. --- Year: 1850 State: Louisiana County: Union Page No: 732 Reel no: Enumerated by: George A.
