Transcription of the 1870 Union Parish Louisiana Census, Mortality Schedule Submitted for the Union Parish Louisiana USGenWeb Archives by T. D. D. Hudson ================================================================================== ================================================================================== INTRODUCTION The United States censuses taken between 1850 and 1880 consisted of a number of different parts called "schedules". What we normally refer to as "the census" is technically the "Population Schedule". The census enumerators also recorded data about farms in the "Agricultural Schedule" and about industrial production in the "Manufacturing Schedule." In 1850 and 1860, they recorded the names of slaveowners in the "Slave Schedule." The final schedule of this period was the "Mortality Schedule," which the government intended as a record of all those who died in the year preceding "census day", which at that time was June 1. Below I have transcribed from the original microfilmed census records all information from the 1870 Union Parish Mortality Schedule. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== YEARS OF DEATH The Mortality Schedules were supposed to be a record of all humans who died in the year preceeding "census day", which at that time was June 1st. This means that the deaths recorded on the 1870 Mortality Schedule should be those that occurred between 1 June 1869 and 31 May 1870. So the deaths occurred in these years: 1869 - deaths recorded in June, July, Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov, & Dec 1870 - deaths recorded in Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, & May ================================================================================== ================================================================================== ANALYSIS OF CAUSES OF DEATH IN 1870 UNION PARISH LOUISIANA The 1870 Mortality Schedule lists 148 deaths occuring in Union Parish between 1 June 1869 and 31 May 1870. As with all census records, there are certainly errors and omissions. In particular, I know that Henry Barron (1803-1870) died in the spring of 1870 while residing near Spearsville, yet this record does not record his death. Likely there were other deaths that went unreported to the census emunerator. The break-down of deaths by Ward was: Ward # deaths _____ __________ 1 27 2 25 3 25 4 24 5 38 6 9 As we might expect, the records transcribed below indicate that infants under one year of age formed the group in Union Parish with the highest death rate, followed by children in general. The age breakdown of the recorded deaths: Age group # deaths __________ ____________ < 1 43 (20 black, 23 white; 28 died of whooping cough) 1 - 10 39 (12 died of whooping cough) 11 - 19 19 20 - 29 11 30 - 39 19 41 - 49 10 50 - 59 3 60 - 68 0 69 - 72 3 73 - 83 0 > 84 1 The enumerators recorded many causes of death in Union Parish during this year. The greatest numbers of deaths were attributed to these four causes: Cause of Death # deaths _________________ ____________ whooping cough 40 pneumonia 20 brain fever or brain inflamation 11 typhoid fever 11 Five deaths each were attributed to: consumption congestive chill or intermittent fever diarriah or flux Four deaths each were attributed to: erysipelas murder/overlaid/assassinated [including a 2 month old black infant] Three deaths each were attributed to these causes: hives hydrothorax measles Two deaths each were attributed to these causes: cancer billeous fever or "remittent" fever dropsey dyptheria "hart disease" unknown causes worms One death each was attributed to these causes: abcess abcess of liver acute "rheumats" burns child birth convulsions disease of brains or congestion of brains disease of abdomum or "parla" congestions fever inflamation of wounds from a horse kick inflamation of bowels jaundice marasmus peritonitis spine disease stomach hemorrage swamp fever worn out old age & fever ================================================================================== ================================================================================== EXPLANATION OF RECORDS TRANSCRIBED BELOW There were twelve columns on the original pre-printed form used by the government census enumerators. On the Union Parish records, columns 8 and 9 were left blank, so I have omitted them below. Those columns asked if the deceased person's parents were of foreign birth. The remaining columns are: 1 The number given in this column is the household number of the family on the Population Scheduleto which the deceased belonged . This number allows one to match the deceased into their proper household given on the regular census. 2 the name of the deceased 3 the age of the deceased 4 the sex of the deceased 5 the race of the deceased "w" = white "b" = black "m" = mulatto (mixed race) 6 the marital status of the deceased - if single the census enumerator left the column blank; if the deceased was married, the enumerator put "m" here 7 birthplace of the deceased 10 month of death of the deceased - one must exercise some care in deciding what year the death occurred. This schedule recorded the deaths that occurred in the calendar year preceding "census day", which in this case was 1 June 1870. This means that deaths recorded in this column for June, July, August, September, October, November, and December occurred in the year 1869. Deaths recorded here for January, February, March, April, and May occurred in 1870. 11 occupation of the deceased, if they were an adult 12 the cause of death - after the enumerators turned in the census sheets, someone went back and changed many of the causes of death. In the event of a slash mark, this indicates the original cause of death recorded, followed by the correction made later. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== 1870 UNION PARISH LOUISIANA CENSUS MORTALITY SCHEDULE ================================================================================== ================================================================================== Ward 1 [the region in central Union Parish surrounding Farmerville] * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 1 * 2 * 3 * 4 * 5 * 6 * 7 * 10 * 11 * 12 ****************************************************************************************************** * * * * * * * * * 2 * Bruton, John * 7/12 * m * w * * La * May * * Marasmus * * * * * * * * * 8 * Ward, Mathew T. * 1 * m * w * * La * March * * Whoping Cough * * * * * * * * * 23 * Marony, Sarah C. * 25 * f * w * m * La * May * House Keeper * Erysipelas * * * * * * * * * 67 * Norsworthy, Sarah * 35 * f * m * w * Alabama * May * House Keeper * Dropsy * * * * * * * * * 105 * Hudson, Alice * 3/12 * f * w * * La * March * * Whoping Cough * * * * * * * * * 105 * Harvey, Jane * 1/12 * f * w * * La * March * * Whoping Cough * * * * * * * * * 114 * Penny, James * 1/12 * m * b * * La * Feby * * Whoping Cough * * * * * * * * * 114 * Penny, Elisa * 1/12 * f * b * * La * Feby * * Whoping Cough * * * * * * * * * 120 * Roberts, Penny * 6/12 * m * b * * La * April * * Whoping Cough * * * * * * * * * 134 * Roberson, Elisabeth * 12 * f * w * * La * Sept * * Disease of Hart * * * * * * * * * 144 * Tugwell, Rachel * 50 * f * b * w * Virginia * Sept * Keeper of House * Erysipelas * * * * * * * * * 150 * Shepherd, Wm. * 1/12 * m * w * * La * Sept * * Whoping Cough * * * * * * * * * 150 * Shepherd, Abram * 1/12 * m * w * * La * Sept * * Whoping Cough * * * * * * * * * 146 * Winds, Polen * 1/12 * f * w * * La * April * * Whoping Cough * * * * * * * * * 153 * Johnson, Peter * 1/12 * m * b * * La * Jany * * Whoping Cough * * * * * * * * * 153 * Johnson, Dick * 1/12 * m * b * * La * Jany * * Whoping Cough * * * * * * * * * 268 * Johnson, Herd * 1/12 * m * m * * La * March * * Whoping Cough * * * * * * * * * 47 * Doty, Samuel * 39 * m * w * w * Tennesee * Nov * Farmer * Typhoid Fever * * * * * * * * * 283 * Aaron, Sarah * 45 * f * w * w * Alabama * March * House Keeper * Change of life * * * * * * * * * 291 * Auld, John R. * 36 * m * w * m * Alabama * May * Farmer * Pneumonia * * * * * * * * * 292 * Hendrick, Telitha * 1 * f * w * * La * Sept * * Pneumonia * * * * * * * * * 294 * Malone, Elisabeth * 33 * f * w * m * Alabama * May * House Keeper * Pneumonia * * * * * * * * * 300 * Eubanks, Joseph L. * 3 * m * w * * La * Sept * * Congestive Chill/Fever Intermittent * * * * * * * * * 307 * Ward, Wm.
