Hudson in December 2006. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== INTRODUCTION The United States censuses taken between 1850 and 1880 consisted of a number of different parts called "schedules". What we normally refer to as "the census" is technically termed the "Population Schedule". The census enumerators also recorded data about farms in the "Agricultural Schedule" and about industrial production in the "Manufacturing Schedule." In 1850 and 1860, they recorded the names of slaveowners in the "Slave Schedule." The final schedule of this period was the "Mortality Schedule," which the government intended as a record of all those who died in the year preceding "census day", which at that time was June 1. Below I have transcribed from the original microfilmed census records all information from the 1880 Union Parish Mortality Schedule. The 1880 Mortality Schedule includes an additional column not found on previous mortality schedules. This column asks the enumerator to give the family number from the Population Schedule to which the deceased belonged. The number was supposed to be the second number given on the regular census (the family number as opposed to the dwelling number). This gives a way of relating the deceased with their surviving family members. Unfortunately, the enumerators of Wards 1 and 4 did not enter this information, but it is given for Wards 2, 3, 5, and 6. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== YEARS OF DEATH The Mortality Schedules were supposed to be a record of all humans who died in the year preceeding "census day", which at that time was June 1st. This means that the deaths recorded on the 1880 Mortality Schedule should be those that occurred between 1 June 1879 and 31 May 1880. So the deaths occurred in these years: 1879 - deaths recorded in June, July, Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov, & Dec 1880 - deaths recorded in Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, & May ================================================================================== ================================================================================== ================================================================================== ================================================================================== Transcriptions begin here ================================================================================== ================================================================================== --- Year: 1880 State: Louisiana County: Union Page No: 1/665 Reel no: Division: Ward One Supervisor's Dist. I have done the above work to the best of my knowledge, securing the signature of the attending Physician in all causes when I could see him. No epidemic prevailed in the district assessed me during the census year, All the deaths resulting from different causes, some of the very young children the old women said died with children's diseases such as Bold Hives, and the line No 241, was very old & died very sudden. I certify that the above work is correct to the best of my knowledge & ability T. L.
