NOTES ON MERIDIAN CHURCH MINUTES

In addition to records of the "routine" meeting minutes which were
conducted and recorded by the same format, serveral other items of
interest are recorded.  These include:  1) the abstract of faith (what
was believed); 2) the constitution; 3) the rules of decorum (how to hold
a meeting); 4) a description of a proposed new church; 5) members (both
free persons and slaves) and 6) some obituary notices with biographical
information (the ones during the Civil War sometimes give place of death
and unit information)

For the most part, these books are very legible and easy to read.  The
writers were educated and the writing more modern than colonial.  These
records are probably good examples of those from early Southern Baptist
Churches from Virginia to Texas.

These books with indexes and typed versions of hard to read pages were
microfilmed by the Samford University, Birmingham, AL.  The film can be
viewed there and at the Union Parish Library, Farmerville, LA.  The
originals, with paper copies and a microfilm copy reside in the LA Tech
University Library special collection in Ruston, LA.  

The indexing of these records was a major effort of my wife Nancy Hall
Ballard for which and to whom I am most grateful.
