They were all written by Hosea Bright Breazeal (Brazeal, Breazeale) (1813 - 1891) who served as clerk of New Hope Church between 1880 and 1887. ============================================================================== New Hope Baptist Church Rules of Decorum The Church shall have stated times of meeting on the Lord's Day met Saturday before. The person supplying the Church as pastor if in order shall always be Moderator. When present except he fill the Seat by appointing some other brother it but if absent, the Church shall appoint a moderator for the time being. The Church Elect a Clerk whose duty it shall be to make a correct minute of the Business done in the conference and after it is read and received, to transcribe the same in to a book to be kept by him for that purpose. When the clerk is absent the Church shall appoint a clerk protem. It shall be the duty of the Moderator to preserve order but shall not act arbitrarily the application of Brother shall be used in Conference. Each member shall be heard when he rises from his seat in order and addressed the moderator. Except he depart from the subject or use personal reflections, no member shall speak more than twice to the same subject without leave of the Church except to explane what may have been misunder stood. All motion with second shall be taken up unless with _____ in the _______. When there is an obgection to a motion & second, the moderator shall allow a sufficient time for debate and then proceed to take up the question if the Church is divided. The moderator shall inquire of the minority if they do submit to go with the majority. If they do not submit, he shall allow a sufficient time for labor in order to come to a oneness. If a oneness cannot be obtained the minority shall submit to the majority provided the majority acts according to scripture. It shall be the duty of each male member to attend regular their conference the church. Should any member fail so to do, he shall at the next conference have a reason and should any one fail to attend three conferences successively, the church shall at the third conference appoint a committee to cite said members to attend the next and give a reason for each Neglect. It shall be the duty of the clerk to read these rules with the articles of faith quarterly at our Communion sessions. These rules may be altered or amended at the discussion of the Church. H. B. We believe in the only one true and living God the Father the word and the Holy Ghost. 2. We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament be the word of God and the only rule of faith and practice. 3. We believe that God elected or chose his people in Christ before the foundation of the World that they should be hold and without blame before him in love. 4. We believe in the Doctoring of original sin and man's incapity to recover himself from the fallen state he is in by nature by his own free will and ability. 5. We believe that Sinners are justified in the sight of God only by the impractical richusness of Jesus Christ. 6. We believe that God elect shall be called effectually regenerated and sanctified by the Holy Ghost and shall be preserved in and never fall away. 7. We believe that baptism and the Lord's Supper are ordinances of Jesus Christ and that true believers are the only subjects of true ordinance and the true mode of Baptism is experience. 8. We believe in the resurrection of the dead and a general judgment and that the punishment of the wicked will be everlasting and that the glory of the richus will be eternal. 9. We believe that no minister has a right to administer the ordinances only such as are called of God as was ______ ________ under the Emposition of hands by a presbatery and in full fellowship with the church of which he is a member. 10. We believe that God has ordained Lord's works that his children should walk in them and that good works only such as God hath commanded in his word and not such as with out the warrant them of ____ devised by means of blinded zeal or offering pretense of good intention. 11. We therefore believe that washing of the Saints feet was ordained by Christ to be done by his children in a church capacity until his second coming. H. B. Breazeal, Clk. ============================================================================== The Covenant We the undersigned being Baptist of the primitive or old-school order beliving it is the duty of the children of God to congregate or join themselves according to the usage of the apostles and primitive saints into churches and living remote from any church of our faith and order adopt the following covenant constitutions and abstract of Faith. 1st We do solemnly give ourselves to God and to one another. 2nd We solemnly promise and covenant in the sight of God to watch over each other in love and to pray one for another to maintain good works such as are ordained of God for us to do or to Walk in and to censure and convict or put down as God may give us ability sin and wicked works and all other works which whether under the garb of religion or otherwise not ordained of God for our observance. 3rd We also solemnly covenant to celebrate the death and sufferings of our Lord by the sacrament of bread and wine as ordained by him before his sufferings. 4th We further covenant to treat our servants with humility and strangers with hospitality and to be mindful of and assist the fore as the word of God requires. 5th We further covenant to meet as a church once a month. ============================================================================== Constitution 1st This body or church shall be comprised of such members only as shall give satisfactory evidence of a change of heart and of obedience to the prospects of the Gospel. 2nd The officers of this church shall be a Moderator, Deacons & clerk who shall be chosen by the suffrage of the members composing the church. 3rd Every member except the moderator shall have an equal right to vote who shall give the casting vote when the vote of the church requires it. ============================================================================== Note: The following transcriptions contain the information recorded in the first book of minutes of New Hope Baptist Church. Of course, there was at one time an earlier book for the period prior to 1870, but we have no record of this earlier book today. ============================================================================== October the 8th 1870, the Church met and after Divine Service went in to conference. 1. Invited visiting Brethren to seats with us. 2. Open the door for the Reception of members. Received Brother J. R. Goyne by Experence and Baptism. 3. Called for the health of the Church and acknowledgment. Brother Tullis made an acknowledgment for non attendence 4. Called for Reference. 5. Inquired for miscellaneous Business. Sister Elisebeth Johnson called for a letter from the Church and the Church granted it. Dismissed in order. Elder H. Archer, MD N. Bird, Clk. November the 12th 1870, the church met and after Divine Service went in to conference 1. Invited visiting Ministers and Brethren to seats with us. 2. Open the Door for the Reception of members. 3. Called for the health of the Church and acknowledgments 4. Called for reference. None. 5. Inquired for miscellaneous Business. It is motions and Sect. That the Rules of Decorum be Read which was done. It is also motion and sect. That the word person in the second Article of the Rules of Decorum be changed to brother which was also done. It is also motion and sect. that the Church go into choice of her ________ for the ensuing year and called Brother H. Archer to the care of the Church. Upon which he agreed to serve us also. Brother J. H. Gilbert called for a letter of dismission from himself and Daughter Sister Fatha R. Cates which was granted by the church. Done by order of the Church in conference. Elder H. Archer, MD. N. Bird, Clk January the 7 AD 1871 the church met and after Divine Survice went in to Confurence. 1st invited visiting Brethron to seats 2nd open the door for the reception of members 3rd called for the helth of the Church and ecknowledgments. Brother Benjamon Briant came forward and made and ecknowledgment for having attatched himself to a Missionary Church and asked the church for forgiveness and the church granted it 4th called for Refference. none 5th Inquired for Miscellaneous Buisiness. it is moved and sect. that the church go into the choice of a Deacon on her next confurence to supplie the place of Brother J. H. Gilbert who has moved. Brother Luis Cooper called for a Letter of Dismission Robert Cooper and wife which granted. By order of the Church in conference. Elder H. Archer, M.D. J. R. Goyne, Clk protem February the 11th 1871 The church met and after praise met in conference and the moderator being absent Brother A. W. Upshaw was called to the Chair. 1st Invited visiting Brethren to seats. 2nd Open the door for the reception of members 3rd Called for the health of the Church and acknowledgments 4th Called for reference. A Reference in case of selecting a deacon was called and laid over until next conference. 5th Called miscellaneous business. Dismissed in order. N. A. W. Upshaw, Md. Protem E. J. Pouncy, Clk. Protem March the 11th A.D. 1871 The church met and after divine service went in to conference. 1st Invited visiting Brethren to seats. 2nd Open the door for the Reception of members. 3rd Called for the health of the Church and acknowledgments. N. Bird made an acknowledgement for non attendence. 4th Called for Reference. A reference in case of the Church selecting a Deacon was taken up and the Church went in to choice of a Deacon and elected N. Bird to serve as Deacon. 5th Called for misalaneous business as it is moved and sect. That the Church call a presbatery and have the Brother ordained. The Church then called a presbaery consisting of Elders J. S. Barrow, T. J. Foster and Brother Stanford H. Archer and also a committee was appointed to wit Brother J. R. Goyne to visit Brother Barrow and solicit his attendance and Brother Goyne to inform Brother Stanford By Word or letter and Brother S. Swilly to visit Brother T. Foster for the same. Brother Archer being inform By the Church the arrangement being made to take place at our May meeting. Also the Church went in to choce of a clerk and elected Brother J. R. Goyne. Done by order of the Church in conference. Elder H. Archer, MD N. Bird, Clk. New Hope Church May 13th 1871 After divine service by Elder T. J. Foster, the church went into conference. 1st Invited visiting Brethren to seats. 2nd Open the door of the church and Huldy Clark came forward & related her experience and was recd. right hand fellowship. 3rd Called for acknowledgements. 4th Called for reference. Report of Bro. Goyne & Cooper rec. & committee discharged. Ordination of Deacon taken up. Elder T. J. Foster & Archer being present and officiating as Presbytery 5th Called for miscellaneous business. Bro. Goyne was appointed as mouth for the Church. Bro. Goyne present. Bro. Needam Burd for examination to the Presbytery found worthy ________[?] and proceeded[?] to the laying on of hands prayer by Elder Foster. Charge by Elder Archer. Extended the right hand of fellowship to Bro. Bird as a deacon of the Church. Elder H. Archer, Mod. J. R. Goyne, C. Clerk. New Hope Church July 8th 1871 After divine services by Elder H. Archer Church went into conference. 1st Invited visiting Brethren to seats. 2nd Opened door of the church. 3rd Called for acknowledgements. 4th Called for reference. 5th Called for miscellaneous business. Proceed to elect delegates to District which resulted in choice of Brethren A. H. Upshaw, N. Burd, J. R. Goyne & E. J. Pouncy. In case of failure Bro. Goyne appointed to prepare the letter. The letter read & received. Elder H. Archer, MD J. R. Goyne, C. C. New Hope Church Aug. 12th A.D. 1871 The church went into conference by appointing Bro. N. Bird Mod. Protem. 1st Invited visiting Brethren to seats with us. 2nd Open the door of the church. 3rd Called for acknowledgments. None. 4th Call for references. 5th Called miscellaneous business. It was motioned and seconded that the Church elect delegates to the Association which resulted in the choice of Brethren A. W. Upshaw, N. Burt, J. R. Goyne & E. J. Pouncey, in case of failure. Brother Swilly called for a letter for Bro. John W. White which request was granted. A letter to the Association to be prepared by the clerk by next conference. There being now further business. Closed. N. Burd, Mod. Protem J. R. Goyne, C.C New Hope Church, Sept. 9th, 1871 After divine service went into conference. 1st Invited visiting Brethren to seats 2nd Open the door of the Church. Sister M. L. Post came forward & was received by Letter in Fellowship of the Church. 3rd Called for acknowledgments. 4th Called for reference. 5th Miscellaneous business and the letter prepared by the clerk for the association presented. G's daughter (and this was not mentioned in the settlement that July), the church declared that the said Hux was in disorder; and on motion and second, and then the voice of the church, a non-fellowship was declared for the said Hux under the existing circumstances, and the clerk was required to notify Winfield Church of this act, giving the reasons for it.
