Witnesses: D. J. Abbot R. G. Pleasant Committee Richmond Carroll W. C. Carr G. W. Clayton ======================================================================================= NOTE: The Fellowship Baptist Church mentioned is now the Spearsville Baptist Church. The church was constituted on 5 June 1848. William Cleaton Carr and George W. Clayton, the deacons named in the deed, were among the founding members, as was Richmond Carroll, a witness to the above transaction. Ruffin G. Pleasant, the other witness, joined the church by October 1849 and served for a while as church clerk. The land that Abbott gave the church lay about four miles east of Spearsville. In August 1855, the church minutes recorded the church name as the "Church of Fellowship at Spearsville". This implies that by this date, the church was holding services in the Village of Spearsville. At the church conference on 2 February 1856, after preaching by Rev. Samuel T. Cobb, the church approved a motion to change the church name from Fellowship to Spearsville. The Spearsville Baptist Church has held services in the Village of Spearsville since that time. The old church building was reportedly given to the local black Baptists who withdrew from Spearsville Baptist Church after the war. It retained the name of Fellowship Baptist Church. ======================================================================================= File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/union/churches/spearsville-church-deed.txt ##########################################################################################
