In 1860 he lived with his family on his farm in southern Union Parish. He served as a private in Company E, 4th Regiment Louisiana Cavalry. He received a parole at Monroe in June 1865, when he gave his residence as Vienna. He must have lived in what was then southwestern Union Parish, the region that was cut off and placed into Lincoln Parish in 1873. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== To the Honorable the Judge of the 11th Judicial District Court in and for the parish of Union, Louisiana. The petition of Susan Bagwell, a widow resident of said Parish and State respectfully represents unto your Honorable that Wiley Bagwell, late of said Parish departed this life at his residence on or about the 22nd day of June Ad 1866 leaving petitioner, a widow and partner in the Community and also seven heirs, the issue of a lawful marriage between petitioner and the said deceased to wit: William J. Bagwell, a major, Cynthia J. Bagwell, wife of T. R. Bagwell and the following minors: Mary E. Bagwell, Wiley G. Bagwell, Martha E. Bagwell, Ervin C. Bagwell and Marion C. Bagwell, also leaving a considerable estate consisting of real and personal property, rights, credits and debts. Petitioner represents that as partner in community and Natural Tutrix to the minor children she is entitled to the Administration. Wherefore, she prays that an Inventory and Appraisement may be had according to law and that after due and legal proceeding having been had, she may be appointed Administrator of said Estate and Natural Tutrix of her above named minor children and for such other orders and decrees as may be necessary. State of Louisiana 11th Judicial District Court Parish of Union It is ordered and decreed that the within application of Mrs. Susan Bagwell to be appointed Administratrix of the Estate of Wiley Bagwell, Decd. be advertised according to law. It is further ordered that Wm. C. Smith, parish Recorder &c be and he is hereby authorized to make an Inventory and Appraisement of all the property belonging to the said Estate and a due return thereof make to this office. It is ordered and decreed that Susan Bagwell be and she is hereby appointed Administratrix of the Estate of Wiley Bagwell, Decd. and that upon her giving bond and good security and letting the oath prescribed by law that Letters of Administration do issue to her. Bagwell, Wiley G. Bagwell, Martha E. Bagwell, Ervin C. Bagwell and Marion C. Bagwell, heirs of the Estate of Wiley Bagwell, Decd. and that upon her taking the oath prescribed by law that letters of Natural Tutorship do issue to her. It is further ordered and decreed that Martin S. Bagwell be and he is hereby appointed Under Tutor of the said minors and that upon his taking the oath prescribed by law. The condition of this obligation is such that whereas the above bounden Susan Bagwell ahs been duly and legally appointed Administratrix of the Estate of Wiley Bagwell, decd. and has taken the oath prescribed by law. Now therefore, if the said Susan Bagwell shall faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent on her as Administratrix of the said Estate and shall render to the judge of said court a true and correct account of all her acts and doings in and about said Estate and shall when legally required so to do pay over all sums of money and deliver all the property of whatever nature belonging to the said Estate to the proper person or persons to receive the same, then this obligation to be null and void. The Petition of Susan Bagwell, Administratrix of the Estate of Wiley Bagwell, Decd. late of said Parish respectfully represents that the personal property of said Estate has been sold according to Law and brought twelve hundred and forty six dollars and twenty cents, that debts have been presented against the Estate amounting to far more than this amount and that therefore it is necessary that the land belonging to said Estate should be sold in order to liquidate the indebtedness of same. She therefore prays for an order of your honorable Court directing the sale of the Land belonging to the Estate to wit: The plantation and residence of the deceased as Inventoried, according to the articles of the Code of Practice and that she be authorized to make the sale and for general Relief.
