Baker enlisted in Company G, 31st Louisiana Infantry Regiment in the spring of 1862. His company officially entered the service of the Confederate States on 6 May 1862 at Monroe. He was born in Merryweather, Alabama, was at the time of his enlistment aged 24 and a farmer. His enlistment officer reported that he had grey eyes, dark hair, a florid complexion, and stood 5' 6.75" in height. He died in the newly-opened Monroe Hospital on 22 October 1862 of "disease of lungs". ================================================================================== State of Louisiana 11th District Court Parish of Union Succession of John Baker, Decd. Whereas I have been informed that Mr. John Baker, late of said Parish and State has lately died in the Confederate Service leaving a small estate and no one having applied to me for or intend applying for letters of Administration on the same. Now, therefore it is hereby ordered that an Inventory and Appraisement be made of the property belonging to said Estate of John Baker, Decd. according to law. Done and signed in office this the 27th of January AD 1863. Jas. L. Guthrie, Clerk State of Louisiana 11th District Court Parish of Union Be it remembered that on this the 9th day of January 1863 in pursuance of law in and for the Parish of Union, I James L. Guthrie, Clerk of District Court aforesaid together with Jacob Flowers and Thomas McCuller who being duly sworn as appraisers proceeded to make an inventory and appraisement of all the property belonging to the Estate of John Baker, Decd., late a resident of the said Parish of thereon said Thomas McCuller being duly and specially appointed and sworn by me the said clerk proceeded to make the following inventory to wit: One tract of land known as the Rowe Place described thus to wit: South West ¼ of South East ¼ and also the North West quarter of South West quarter and East ½ of South East ¼, South ¼ of North East quarter of Section No. 6 Township Nineteen Range 3 East containing two hundred acres appraised @ $2 per acre $400.00 Also one account on John Defee [blank] Also his wages due by Government for service rendered 4.50 Having closed the foregoing Inventory and Appraisement, I the same clerk have caused the said appraisers to sign with me together with R. C. Fox and John E. Baker, good and lawful citizens domiciled in the Parish and State aforesaid.
