The Petition of Thomas Brantley of the Parish of Union with respect represents unto your honor that Jesse Brantley, late of said Parish, departed this life some time during the month of May of this present year 1849. You petitioner represents that he is the father of said deceased, that the decd. died with a considerable amount of property in said parish consisting of slaves, lands & other property and leaving his wife (Elizabeth) Brantly and three young children in the said parish where they now reside. Petitioner further represents that the said Jesse Brantley died intestate. He prays that an Inventory of the property composing the Estate of the said Jesse Brantley be taken according to law and that your petitioner be appointed Administrator of the said Estate and for such other relief in the premises as the case may require. State of Louisiana Parish of Union District Court of the 12th District It is ordered that an Inventory and Appraisement of the property to be found belonging to said succession by Claiborn M. Smith the Parish recorder and that make a return thereof according to law. Given under my hand on this 10th June 1849. Tho. VanHook, clk. State of Louisiana 12th district court Parish of Union Let the prayer of the petition be granted and it is further ordered that an inventory of the property composing the Estate of Jesse Brantley, decd. late of said Parish be taken by Claiborn M. Smith, the Recorder and Ex Officio Notary Public in and for the said Parish according to law. June 5, 1849. Tho. VanHook, Clk. State of Louisiana Parish of Union Be it remembered that an order issued out from the Honorable the 12th Judicial District court in and for the Parish of Union, La. to me directed that I, Claiborn M. Smith, parish Recorder and Ex Officio Public in and for the said parish make an Inventory & Appraisement of the property belonging to the Estate of Jesse Brantley, decd. late of said Parish and I have for that purpose on this the 6th day of September 1849 appointed William Parott & Uriah Bass to act as appraisers to Inventory said Estate and witnessed by [blank] and [blank] all residents of the said Parish of Union and State of Louisiana and after the said appraisers having been duly qualified and sworn by me the said Recorder. They proceeded to make the following inventory. 1 Everat, a negro boy apprd. @ $500.00 1 Jurry, a negro boy apprd. @ 575.00 1 Negro boy, John apprd. @ 450.00 1 Negro girl, Mariah apprd. @ 350.00 1 Negro girl, Peggy apprd. @ 350.00 1 Negro worman Named Mary and her four children Emily, Peggy, Martha & Maranna 1000.00 120 acres land, improvements and buildings [blank] 1 set of mill rocks and irons 120.00 1 mare & colt 20.00 1 black mule, Gu** 75.00 1 black mule, Pate 75.00 1 Sorrel mule, Gin 45.00 1 Little mule, Mule 11.00 14 head of cattle 63.00 Woodwork of one wagon 35.00 1 lot of irons 15.00 1 grind stone 1.50 1 yoke of oxen 30.00 40 acres of land and improvements known by [unreadable] 100.00 35 head of hogs more or less ___70.00 $4484.50 The above and foregoing inventory made & signed in my presence and in the presence of the aforesaid witnesses on the day and year first written.
