To the Honorable the Judge of the 12th Judicial District Court in and for the Parish of Union, Louisiana. The petition of Henry C. Bartlett, a resident of the Parish of Ouachita in said State with respect represents that James Caldwell, the minor son of Joseph H. Caldwell by his marriage with Sarah Hamilton, decd. is without a Tutor both his said father and mother being dead. That the father of said minor was a resident of said parish of Union when he died a few days ago. That said minor has some property in right of his mother, decd. consisting in negroes and land & it becomes necessary to have a Tutor appointed to take care of the person and property of said minor. Petitioner was that said minor has no male relations residents within 30 miles of Farmerville, the county seat of your said parish except your petitioner who is his grand uncle by marriage and Carson H. M. Sanplin who is grand uncle, both residents of the Parish of Ouachita, La. Wherefore petitioner prays your honor to cause a family meeting to be convened according to law composed of your petitioner, said M. Sanplin and the near neighbors to advise and recommend who should be appointed Tutor to said minor and for all such orders and duties in the premises as the nature of the case may require & that your Honor be [unreadable] tutor according to law & for general relief &c. McGuire & Ray, Atty. State of Louisiana Parish of Union Let the prayer of the within petition be granted and it is ordered that a family meeting to be composed of Henry C. Bartlett and Corsarett M. Sanplin relatives and John T. Sterling Hollister, George M. Savage and William A. Darby friends and neighbors of James Caldwell minor son of Joseph Caldwell deceased be convoked to meet before Claiborn M. Smith, Parish recorder on the 25th day of September 1849 at the town of Farmerville to advise and recommend who should be appointed tutor to said James Caldwell according to law. Done & signed on this 18th day of Sept. 1849. Tho. VanHook Clk., dist. Court It is ordered that James H. Carson be appointed Under Tutor to James Caldwell, minor son of George Caldwell, decd on taking the oath prescribed by law. Done & signed on this the 25th day of Sept. 1849. Tho. VanHook, Clk. It is ordered that the proceedings of the family meeting convoked for the purpose of recommending a suitable person to be appointed to the tutorship of the minor James Caldwell be homologated and confirmed in all its parts and is further ordered that Henry C. Bartlett be appointed & confirmed Tutor to the said Caldwell, son of George H. Caldwell, deceased in accordance with the recommendation of said meeting by giving bond & security and taking the oath prescribed by law. Done & signed in office on this the 24th day of Sept. AD 1849. Tho. VanHook, Clerk James Caldwell, Minor Tutorship State of Louisiana Parish of Union District Clerk’s Office Whereas Henry C. Bartlett has been appointed Tutor of James Caldwell, minor son of Joseph H. Caldwell, Decd. and has given bond and security and taken the oath prescribed by law. Now therefore he is hereby authorized and requested to do and perform all acts appertaining to said appointment according to law. Given under my hand & the seal of Court on this the 24th day of Sept. AD 1849. Tho. VanHook Clk, Dist. Court State of Louisiana Parish of Union Know all men by these presents that we Henry C. Bartlett as principal and William A. Darby his security are held and firmly bound unto Geo. W. Copley, the Judge of the 12th Judicial District Court in and for the said parish and his successors in office in the sum of two thousand five hundred & fifty dollars to the payment thereof we hereby bind ourselves, our heirs and our assigns on this 25th day of Sept. Ad 189. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the said Henry C. Bartlett has been appointed tutor to James Caldwell, minor son of George H. Caldwell, deceased according to the proceedings had in said court on file in the Clerk’s office. Now therefore if the said Henry C. Bartlett shall discharge all the duties required of him as Tutor aforesaid and shall administer the property of his said word according to law & shall make a true and faithful account of his Tutorship to the said Judge of the said minor or to his heirs & representatives then the above obligation is to be null & void or else to be and remain in full force & effect. State of Louisiana Parish of Union Be it remembers that in an order in pursuance of an order from the 12th District Court in and for the Parish of Union to me directed Henry C. Bartlett, Executor and John T. Sterling, William H. Miller, Geo. M. Savage and William a. Darby friends came before me Claiborn M. Smith the Parish Recorder in and for said Parish duly composed and sworn as such convened as a family meeting of the purpose of recommending a suitable person to be appointed Tutor to the minor James Caldwell, son of George H. Caldwell, deceased, late of said Parish and after a free and impartial consideration and first being legally sworn by e the said members convened as aforesaid made the following report and the [unreadable] members of said family meeting have signed hereto and me the said Recorder in the presence of Eli L.
