Clark of Shiloh, Union Parish Louisiana Union Parish Louisiana Succession Book G, pp. 212 – 267 ================================================================================== ================================================================================== BACKGROUND INFORMATION on DR. CLARK: John R. Clark was a Shiloh physician and merchant who was born in South Carolina on 1 April 1811. His eldest child was born about 1834 in Georgia, so unless he had a first wife, he married Martha ? about 1832 or 1833. She was born about 1815 in Georgia. In 1850, John and Martha lived in Henry County Georgia, where he owned a plantation whose real estate was valued at $5000. He owned sixteen slaves that year. Sometime between 1850 and 1859, Dr. Clark moved his family from Georgia to Shiloh, in western Union Parish. Clark operated a medical practice in western Union Parish, with Dr. J. J. Bowls living in his household in 1860 and (presumably) working with Clark. In addition to his medical work, Clark also operated a large and lucrative mercantile business. In 1860, his real estate was valued at $6000 and his personal estate at $52,665. This sum included his 55 slaves. By 1870, Clark's occupation was listed only as a retail merchant, so he may have retired from his medical practice. Clark died that winter, on 7 December 1870, and was buried in the Shiloh Cemetery. Given the economic devastation caused by the War Between the States, Dr. Clark's estate was enormous: over $26,200! ================================================================================== ================================================================================== To the Honorable the Judge of the Parish Court in and for the Parish of Union, Louisiana.
