He served throughout the Vicksburg Campaign, and was captured with his unit at the surrender of Vicksburg in July 1863. He rejoined his until in early 1864, reporting for duty at Vienna. After the official exchange in July 1864, the army went into camp at Alexandria, Pineville, and then near Natchitoches. Many sick soldiers were sent from their posts home to Union Parish during this period, so Clayton may have died while on sick furlough from the army. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== To the Honorable the Judge of the Eleventh Judicial District Court in and for the Parish of Union, State of Louisiana.
