Clemmons (Clemonds, Clamands) enlisted as a private in the "Stars of Equality" in the summer of 1861. This unit became Company E, 19th Louisiana Infantry Regiment. They trained at Camp Moore in the fall of 1861 and wintered at Chalmette, just below New Orleans. They went by rail line north to Shiloh in early 1862 and saw heavy fighting at the Battle of Pittsburg Landing (Shiloh) on April 6 and 7th. The 19th Louisiana participated in the repeated charges of the Confederate Army against the Yankees in the "Hornet's Nest" on the 7th. Since Clemmons died in April 1862, it is very likely that he perished as a result of the action at Pittsburg Landing. On the other hand, many soldiers also died of disease during this period. His military file provides no clue as to his cause of death. ================================================================================== To the Honorable the Judge of the 11th Judicial District Court in and for the Parish of Union, Louisiana.
