The petition of Julia Mathews, wife of Thomas C. Mathews who joins in this Petition want assist and authorize his said wife both residents of the Parish and State aforesaid, respectfully represents unto your Honorable Court that Virginia Mary Cohill [sic] is a minor, that her mother and Natural Tutrix, Ellen McLaughlin Davidson, Decd. lately in the Parish and State aforesaid, that all the said minor descendants are dead except your Petitioner who is her Natural Grand Mother, that petitioner is by effect of law entitled to the Tutorship of the said minor before any other person, that there is property of the said minor to a considerable amount consisting of Negroes and personal property that needs looking after and [blank]. Therefore petitioner prays that she be appointed and confirmed by law as Tutrix of her said grand daughter Virginia Mary Cogshill [sic] and that Thomas C. Mathews, her aforesaid husband be appointed Co Tutor according to law and that letters of Tutorship do issue to them on their complying with the legal prerequisites and for all orders and decrees necessary in the premises and for general relief &c. State of Louisiana 11th Judicial District Court Parish of Union The premises considered, it is hereby ordered and decreed that the above application of Julia Mathews and Thomas C. Mathews to be appointed Tutrix and Co Tutor of the minor Virginia Mary Coghill [sic] be advertised according to law. Done and signed in office on this 18th day of July AD 1864. Thos. C. Lewis, Clerk State of Louisiana 11th Judicial District Court Parish of Union The premises considered, it is hereby ordered and decreed that Julia Mathews and Thomas C. Mathews be and they are hereby appointed and confirmed as Tutrix and Co Tutor of the minor Virginia Mary Cogshill and that upon them giving bond with good security and taking the oath prescribed by law, that letters of Tutorship do issue to them. It is further ordered that [blank] be and he is hereby appointed Under Tutor to said minor and upon his taking the oath that letters do issue to him. Done and signed in office this 25th day of July AD 1864. Thos. C. Lewis, Clerk State of Louisiana 11th Judicial District Court Parish of Union I, Julia Mathews do solemnly swear that I will faithfully and impartially discharge all and singular the duties incumbent on her as Tutrix of the minor Virginia Mary Cogshill according to the best of my ability and understanding. Now therefore the said Julia Mathews is hereby duly and legally authorized and empowered to perform all the acts appertaining to the said appointment according to law.
