In 1860 he lived near Marion, but did not own a farm. The Petition of Ann Rebecca Gates, a feme [sic] sole of your aforesaid Parish and State respectfully represents that Joseph Gates of your aforesaid State and Parish, late a resident died in said Parish intestate about the 2nd of December 1866 leaving a small Estate consisting of Personal property, rights, credits and debts, that he also left your petitioner as his surviving widow in community as well as the following minor children, Jacob S. Gates, Permelia Ann Gates, Henry E. Gates and Godfrey Gates and petitioner avers that the aforesaid minors are the issue of the marriage between Petitioner and said Decd. Joseph Gates. Wherefore petitioner prays that she may be appointed and confirmed the Natural Tutrix of the aforesaid minors that this her application be duly advertised and that after the legal delays she be appointed Administratrix of the Estate of Joseph Gated, Decd. for an appraisement and Inventory of said Estate and for all orders and decrees necessary in the premises and for general relief &c. Gates to be appointed Administratrix of the Estate of Joseph Gates, Decd. be advertised according to Law and it is further ordered that W. C. Smith, Recorder &c proceed to make an Inventory and appraisement of all the property belonging to the said Estate and due return thereof make to this office. Gates do solemnly swear that I will faithfully and impartially discharge all the duties incumbent upon me as Administratrix of the Estate of Joseph Gates, deceased to the best of my ability and understanding. Gates has been duly and legally appointed Administratrix of the Estate of Joseph Gates, Deceased and she has given bond with good security and has taken the oath prescribed by law. Now therefore, the said Ann R. Gates is hereby duly and legally authorized and empowered to do and perform all the acts appertaining to the said appointment according to Law. Heath as security are held and firmly bound unto the Honorable J. D. Watkins, Judge of the Eleventh Judicial District Court in and for Union Parish, La. for the time being or to his successors in office in the just and full sum of nine hundred and twelve and 56/100 dollars be the true and full payment thereof we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, administrators and legal representatives firmly and in solido by these presents. Dated at Farmerville, La. this 7th day of January AD 1867. The condition of the obligation is such that whereas the said Ann R. Gates has been duly and legally appointed and confirmed as Administratrix of the Estate of Joseph Gates, deceased and she has taken the oath required by law. Now therefore if the said Ann R. Gates shall faithfully and impartially discharge all the duties incumbent upon her as Administratrix of the said Estate and shall render to the Judge of said court a true and correct account of all her acts and claims in and about said Estate and when legally required so to do shall pay over all sums of money and deliver all the property belonging to said Estate to the proper person or persons to receive the same. Anna Rebecca Gates Administratrix Per Jno. L. Barrett, Atty. The petition of A. R. Gates, Administratrix of the Estate of Joseph Gates, Decd. to the Honorable the Judge of the 11th Judicial District Court in and for Union Parish, La. respectfully shows that the Administratrix has computed the Administration of said Estate and reduced the whole of the assets upon the Inventory of said Estate to cash (except 1 bay mare and 5 head sheep) which died and for which she is not chargeable and that the whole amount is six hundred and ninety one dollars and fifty cents ($691.50) and further that she has recognized the following as privilege debts to be paid in the order in which they are put forth and the assets being insufficient to pay the privilege debts. She does not put upon the Tableau the ordinary debts of which there are many. 1st Law charges Clerk Cost, See Voucher 1 Recorders fee, See Voucher 2 Advertisement, See Voucher 3 Attys. fees, See Voucher 4 $25.00 Comm. Of Admx. on $691.50 @ 2 ˝% 17.37 2nd Claims of the widow and minors statute for $1000.00 under the statute of 1852 $1000.00 Wherefore petitioner prays that this her statement of debts and assets and Tableau of Distribution be advertised according to law and after the legal delays that the same homologated and that she be ordered to pay the debts in the order in which they showed in said Tableau and that her bond be cancelled for all orders necessary in the premises and for general relief &c. Gates, Admx. of the Est. of Joseph Gates, Decd. 1st Vouchers filed with said Tableau 2nd James W. Reid, Clerk of the District Court sworn says he was the acting clerk of said Court in March last, that said Tableau was filed on the 26th day of March 1868and has been advertised for more than thirty days prior to this date by publication in a weekly newspaper published in said Parish called the Union Record and by posting at the door of the courthouse in the town of Farmerville in said Parish and that no opposition has been filed to the same. Reid, Clerk State of Louisiana 11th Judicial District court Parish of union By reason of the law and the evidence in this case by further reason of the proper and legal advertisement having been made and no opposition having been filed thereto, it is hereby ordered, adjudged and decreed that the within statement of Debts and Tableau of Distribution be and the same is hereby allowed, approved and homologated in all its parts and the Administratrix is ordered to pay in accordance therewith.
