According to Gannon's recent history of the 6th Louisiana, Gilbert was present for duty through August 1862, but he was wounded at Chantilly, Virginia on September 1st and spent the rest of the year recovering. He was admitted to Howard’s Grove Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, where he died of smallpox. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== ================================================================================= ================================================================================== Union Parish Louisiana Succession Book E, pp. 681 - 683 ================================================================================== ================================================================================== To the Honorable the Judge of the 11th Judicial District Court in and for the Parish of Union, State of Louisiana.
