To the Honorable the Judge of the 11th Judicial District Court in and for the Parish of Union, Louisiana. The petition of Martha H. Goodwin a resident of said Parish respectfully represents unto your honor that her husband Jones E. Goodwin, late of said Parish, departed this life on or about 24th day of September last, he being absent from the state in the military service leaving herself a widow in community and five children, the issue of the marriage between him and petitioner, who are all minors to wit: Jane E. Goodwin, Julia A., James B., William F. and Cuba S. Goodwin, also having a considerable Estate consisting of slaves, land and personal property. She prays that an inventory and appraisement may be made according to law, and that after due proceedings had, she may be appointed administratrix of said Estate, and appointed Natural Tutrix to her said minor children and that Ben Tubb be appointed Under tutor and for such order and relief as the case requires and advice of. H. Regenburg, Atty State of Louisiana 11th Judicial District Court Parish of Union The premises considered it is ordered, adjudged and decreed that the within application of Martha A. Goodwin to be appointed Admx. Of the Estate of Jones E. Goodwin, Decd. be advertised according to law. It is further ordered that W. C. Smith, Parish Recorder & Ex Officio Notary Public in and for said parish and state be and he is authorized to make an inventory and appraisement of the property belonging to the estate of Jones E. Goodwin, Decd. and due return thereof make to this office without delay. Done and signed in office this 16th day of December 1861. Jas. L. Guthrie, Clerk State of Louisiana 11th Judicial District Court Parish of Union The premises considered and by reason of the proper advertisement having been made and there being no opposition filed in my office, it is therefore ordered and decreed that Martha A. Goodwin be appointed Admx. of the Estate of Jones E. Goodwin, Decd. and upon taking the oath and giving bond as required by law that letters do issue to her. Done and signed on this the 19th day of November 1861 in my office Jas. L. Guthrie, Clerk State of Louisiana 11th Judicial District Court Parish of Union The premises considered this it is ordered and decreed that Martha A. Goodwin be approved Natural Tutrix to her minor children to wit [blank] and upon taking the oath prescribed by law that letters do issue to her. It is further ordered that Benj. Tubb be appointed Under tutor to said minors and upon taking the oath prescribed by law that letter do issue to him. Done and signed in office on this 19th day of November 1861. Jas. L. Guthrie, Clerk State of Louisiana Parish of Union Know all men by these presents that we, M. A. Goodwin of principal and J. F. Fuller, Benj. Tubb and A. W. Harris as her Guarantors, are held and firmly bound unto W. B. Egan, Judge of the 11th Judl. District Court in and for said parish and state or to his legal successors in office in the sum of five Thousand two Hundred Forty Dollars to the true and faithful payment thereof well and truly to be made, we find ourselves, our heirs and assigns in whole on this the 19th day of November AD 1861. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the same M. A. Goodwin has been appointed administratrix of the estate of Jones E. Goodwin, Decd. and he has to rec. the oath prescribed by law. Now therefore if the said M. A. Goodwin shall faithfully and impartially discharge and administer said Estate and shall render a true and accurate accounting to the Judge of said Court or to his successors in office or to his Succession in office or to the legal heirs of said Estate where required legally so to do this obligation to be null and void otherwise to be and remain in full force and effect against the principal and securities. Goodwin and has taken the oath prescribed by law. Now, therefore, the said Martha A. Goodwin is hereby duly and legally authorized and empowered to do and perform all the duties appertaining to said appointment according to law. Smith, Recorder State of Louisiana Parish of Union Be it remembered that on this the Eleventh day of November AD One thousand Eight Hundred and sixty one, in presence of an order of the Honorable Eleventh Judicial District Court within and for the Parish and State aforesaid to me William C. Smith, Parish Recorder & Ex Officio Notary Public in and for the Parish of Union directed and commanding me to make an inventory and appraisement of all the property, rights and credits belonging to the Estate and Succession of Jones E. Goodwin, Deceased late of the Parish of Union and being assisted by Henry W. Hamilton and Joseph Shaw, lawful citizens of the Parish of Union, they being duly appointed and sworn by me the said Recorder as appraisers and in the presence of the lawful and competent witnesses preceded to make the following inventory and appraisement.
