Hopkins, Decd., Union Parish Louisiana Union Parish Louisiana Succession Book G, pp. 103 - 109 ================================================================================= ================================================================================= NOTE: William Hopkins, undoubtedly the man who filed the following petition, lived in Union Parish in 1860. Born about 1803 in Georgia, he owned an extensive farm near Shiloh. His real estate was valued at $6200 and personal estate at $27,345. Hopkins had only recently moved to Union Parish from Georgia, as his youngest child was born there in 1844. Hopkins' son William L. Hopkins whose estate is referenced below is not listed in Union Parish in 1860, nor can I find him elsewhere in Louisiana or in Georgia. He is likely the following Confederate soldier: Hopkins, W. L., Pvt. Co. K, 2nd La. Inf. En. Aug. 31, 1861, Camp Magruder. Present on all Rolls to Oct., 1861. Roll for Nov. and Dec., 1861, Absent, sick, in Hospl., Richmond. Rolls from Jan., 1862, to April, 1862, Present. Roll for May and June, 1862, Absent, sick, in Hospl. Petersburg. Rolls from July, 1862, to Dec., 1863, Present. Roll for Jan. and Feb., 1864, Absent, on furlough. ================================================================================= ================================================================================= To the Honorable the Judge of the 11th Judicial District Court in and for the Parish of Union, State of Louisiana. The petition of William Hopkins, a resident of said Parish and State aforesaid respectfully shows that William L. Hopkins as son of petitioner departed this life in said Parish of Union a few days since to wit on the 20th day of July 1868 leaving a small Estate and the following named minor children to wit: Jennie Hopkins and Guadaloupe Hopkins, the issue of the marriage of deceased with former wife to wit Emily Bolton now deceased; that the said minors are the grand children of petitioner. It is further alleged that petitioner is the maternal grandfather of the said minors; that there is no necessity for Administrating the Estate of decd. as he owed no debts but little of any thing is due him in the way of credits. Wherefore petitioner prays that this his application be advertised according to law and that he be appointed Tutor and that L. W. Hopkins be appointed Under tutor to the aforesaid minors. That an Inventory of their property be made according to law and upon petitioner complying with the law in giving bond and security, that letters of Tutorship do issue to him for all further orders necessary in the premises and for general relief &c. Hopkins to be appointed Tutor to the minors Jennie and Guadaloupe Hopkins, heirs of the Estate of L. W. Hopkins, Decd. to be advertised according to law and further that Wm. C. Smith, Parish Recorder and Ex Officio Notary Public be and he is hereby authorized to make an Inventory and Appraisement of all the property belonging to said minors and due return thereof make to this office. Hopkins, Petitioner having complied with the law by advertising his application and giving a mortgage on real property in the Parish to secure the same and he is hereby appointed Tutor to the minors Jennie and Guadaloupe Hopkins and that A. Smith, Recorder & Ex Officio Notary Public in and for said parish directed authorizing me to make an Inventory and Appraisement of all the property situated in the Parish of Union, La. belonging to the minors Jennie and Guadalupe Hopkins, heirs of W. Smith, Recorder State of Louisiana Parish of Union Be it remembered that I, William Hopkins for and in consideration of the sum of Eleven hundred and twenty five dollars and ninety cents, in property received in my hands being the property of the minors Jennie and Guadalupe Hopkins, heirs of the Estate of Wm. L. Hopkins, Deceased, do by these presents mortgage unto the Honorable J. D. Watkins, Judge of the Eleventh Judicial District Court for the time being and to his successors in office. The following described tract or parcel of land being and lying in Union Parish, Louisiana to wit: The NE ¼ of NW ¼ of Sec. 22 and the East half and the South half of NW ¼ and the NW ¼ of the NW ¼ and North half of SW ¼ and the SE ¼ of SW ¼ Section (15) Fifteen and the West half of SW ¼ and SW ¼ of NW ¼ of Section fourteen all in Township Twenty from Range two West containing all seven hundred and twenty acres more or less. The same to be and remain mortgaged until a final settlement shall be made between the aforesaid Wm. L. Hopkins and the said minors or their legal representatives. In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in presence of William C. Smith and Hansord Dean, witnesses of lawful age and domicile who also sign the same together with the part on this the 13th day of August AD One thousand eight hundred and sixty eight. ATTEST: W. C. Now therefore the said William Hopkins is hereby duly and legally authorized and empowered to do and perform all the acts appertaining to said appointment according to law.
