Johnson enlisted in the summer of 1861 in the "Independent Rangers", a company of men from Union Parish raised for service in the Confederate Army. Johnson was elected as the company's original second lieutenant. He was present for duty at all times through April 1862, but he was discharged by General Villipique on May 12th. He may have enlisted in another military unit from Louisiana, and perhaps died in the army. However, thus far no other military record for him has been located. ================================================================================== To the Honorable the Judge of the Eleventh Judicial District Court in and for the parish of Union, State of Louisiana. The petition of William Edmonds, a resident of said Parish and State, respectfully represents unto your Honor that Thaddeus C. Johnson, late of said Parish departed this life on or about the 17th November AD 1864 intestate, leaving an Estate consisting of personal property, rights and credits, also leaving two heirs to wit: William and Martha G. Johnson, both minors. Petitioner prays that an inventory and appraisement may be had according to law and that after due proceedings, he may be appointed Administrator of the said Estate and that John Edmonds who is the maternal Grand father of the said minors be appointed tutor and James H. Johnson Under tutor and for such other orders and decrees in the premises as the case may require. H. Regenburg, Atty. State of Louisiana 11th District Court Parish of Union It is hereby ordered and decreed that the above application of William Edmonds to be appointed Administrator of the Estate of Thaddeus C. Johnson, Decd. be advertised according to law. It is further ordered that W. C. Smith, parish Recorder be authorized to make an inventory and appraisement of all the property belonging to the said Estate of T. C. Johnson, Decd. and due return thereof make to this office. Done and signed in office on this the 4th day of January AD 1865. Thos. C. Lewis, Clerk State of Louisiana 11th District Court Parish of Union The premises considered and by reason of due and legal advertisement having been made and no opposition being filed thereto, it is ordered and decreed that William Edmonds be and he is hereby appointed and confirmed as Administrator of the Estate of Thadeus C. Johnson, Decd. and that upon his giving bond with good security and taking the oath prescribed by law, that letters as such do issue to him. It is further ordered that John Edmonds be appointed and confirmed as tutor of the following minor heirs of the Estate of T. C. Johnson, Decd. to wit: William and Martha G. Johnson, and that upon his giving bond with good security and taking the oath prescribed by law that letters of tutorship do issue to him. It is further ordered that James H. Johnson be appointed Under Tutor of said minors and that upon his taking the oath prescribed by law that letters do issue to him. Done and signed in office on this 16th day of January AD 1865. Thos. Smith, Parish Recorder and Ex Officio Notary Public in and for the said Parish directed, I proceeded to make an inventory of the rights and credits belonging to the Estate of Thadeus C. Oliver and Henry Pylants note due Jany 1, 1862 with 16% interest from Maturity until paid __323.00 Amount brought forward $1301.00 Thus done and signed in my office in the Town of Farmerville in the presence of R. Duly and John Edmonds, as his security are held and firmly bound unto Honorable W. B. Egan, Judge of the 11th Judicial District Court in and for Union Parish, Louisiana for the time being or to his successors in office in the just and full sum of one thousand six hundred and thirty dollars to the true and faithful payment which well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs assigns, Executors and legal representatives firmly by these presents. Date at Farmerville, Louisiana on this the 14th day of January AD 1865. The condition of the above obligatin is such that whereas the above bounden William Edmonds has been duly and legally appointed and confirmed as Administrator of the Estate of Thadeus C. Johnson, Decd. and he has taken the oath prescribed by law. Now therefore if the said William Edmonds shall faithfully and impartially discharge all the duties incumbent on him as Administrator of said Estate and shall render to the Judge of said Court a true and correct account of all his acts and doings in and about said Estate and shall whenever legally required so to do pay over all sums of money and deliver all the property of whatever nature in his hands belonging to said Estate to the proper person or persons to receive the same. Then and in that case the above obligation to be null and void, otherwise to be and remain in full force and virtue against the principal and his said securities. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the said John Edmonds has been duly and equally appointed and confirmed as Tutor of the following minor heirs of the Estate of Thadeus C. Johnson, Decd. to wit: William and Martha G. Johnson and he has taken the oath prescribed by law. Now, therefore if the said John Edmonds shall faithfully and impartially perform all the duties incumbent on him as Tutor of aforesaid and shall render to the Judge of said court a true and correct account of all his acts and doings in and about said matter of Tutorship and shall faithfully attend to and look after the interest of said minors in all things whatsoever pertaining thereto and shall whenever legally required so to do, pay over all sums of money and deliver all the property of whatever nature in his hands belonging to said minors to the person or persons to receive the same, then and that case this obligation to be null and void.
