He lived near Union Cross Roads, in north/central Union Parish, where he owned a farm. His wife Margaret H. Jones was born about 1831 in Georgia, and daughter Josephine born about 1858. Enoch enlisted in the "Phoenix Rifles", Company C, 17th Louisiana Infantry Regiment on 9 February 1863 at Farmerville. He served with his unit through the climax of the Vicksburg Campaign, receiving a parole in July 1863 like others in his unit. The Petition of Joseph L. Tugwell, a resident of said Parish respectfully represents that Enoch Jones departed this life in or about February AD 1865 leaving an Estate consisting of land, stock and other personal property also leaving a widow in Community Margaret Jones and two children Josephine and Mary A. Jones, minors who are his heirs. Petitioner represents that no oaths have been taken to administer said Estate. He prays that an Inventory and Appraisement may be had according to law and that he be appointed Admr. of the same and for such other orders and decrees as may be necessary in the premises. H. Regenburg, Atty. State of Louisiana Parish of Union It is ordered that the within petition of Joseph L. Tugwell to be appointed Admr. of the Estate of Enoch Jones be advertised according to law and that William C. Smith, Recorder & Ex Officio Notary Public make an Inventory of said Estate and make due return thereof according to law. J. W. Reid Clerk, District Court State of Louisiana 11th Judicial District Court Parish of Union The premises considered it is ordered and decreed that the prayer of the within application be granted and that Joseph L. Tugwell be and he is hereby duly and legally appointed Administrator of the Estate of Enoch Jones, Deceased. Done and signed in office this 8th day of November AD 1866. J. W. Tugwell, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully and impartially discharge all the duties incumbent before me as Administrator of the Estate of Enoch Jones, Deceased according to the best of my ability and understanding. Tugwell has been duly and legally appointed Administrator of the Estate of Enoch Jones, Deceased and he has given bond with good security and has taken the oath prescribed by law. Now, therefore the said Joseph L. Tugwell is hereby duly and legally authorized to do and perform all the acts appertaining to said appointment according to law. Reid, Clerk, District Court State of Louisiana 11th Judicial District Court Parish of Union $892.00 Know all men by these present that we Joseph L. Tugwell as principal and Fredrick H. Carson as security are held and firmly bound unto the Honorable J. D. Watkins, Judge of the 11th Judicial District Court in and for the parish of Union, La. for the time or to his successors in office in the just and full sum of Eight hundred and ninety two Dollars to the true and full payment thereof we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, administrators and legal representatives firmly and in solido by these presents. Dated at Farmerville, La. this 8th day of November AD 1866. The condition of this obligation is such that whereas the said Joseph L. Tugwell has been duly and legally appointed and confirmed as Administrator of the Estate of Enoch Jones, deceased and he has taken the oath prescribed by law. Now therefore if the said Joseph L. Tugwell shall faithfully and impartially discharge all the duties incumbent on me as Administrator of the said Estate and shall render to the Judge of said Court a true and correct account of all his acts and doings in and about said Estate and shall when legally required so to do pay over all sums of money and deliver all the property belonging to the said Estate to the proper person or persons to receive the same. Reid, Clerk To the Honorable the Judge of the Eleventh Judicial District Court in and for the Parish of Union, Louisiana. The petition of Joseph L. Tugwell, Administrator of the Estate of Enoch Jones, Decd. late of said parish respectfully represents unto your honor that the personal property of said Estate is unproductive and expensive to keep and subject to waste and deterioration. He therefore prays for an order from your Honorable court directing the sale of the same for cash and that he may be appointed to make the sale and for such other orders in the premises as may be necessary. State of Louisiana 11th Judicial District Court Parish of Union Let the prayer of the within application be granted and it is hereby ordered and decreed that all the personal property belonging to the Estate of Enoch Jones, Decd be sold in accordance with Articles 990 and 991 of the Code of Practice. It is further ordered that Joseph L. Tugwell be and he is hereby authorized and empowered to make the said sale after the proper and legal advertisement and due return thereof make to this office on this 12th day of November AD 1866. J. Smith, Recorder State of Louisiana Parish of Union Be it remembered that on this the eight day of November AD One thousand eight hundred and sixty six pursuant to an order of the Honorable 11th Judicial District Court in and for the parish of Union and State aforesaid and to me William C. Smith, Recorder and Ex Officio Notary Public in and for the Parish and State aforesaid, directed authorizing me to make an Inventory and Appraisement of the property, rights and credits belonging to the Estate of Enoch Jones, Decd. late of the Parish of Union and being assisted by Solomon Murry and Marvin M. Harris, male citizens of said Parish of lawful age sworn by me as appraisers and in the presence of witnesses proceeded to make said Inventory and Appraisement as follows to wit: 160 acres of land more or less situated in the Parish of Union, La. with the improvements thereon apprd. @ $2 per acre $320.00 400 acres of land entered the confederate land not valued 10 Head of stock cattle apprd. @ $5 per head 50.00 23 Head of stock hogs apprd. @ $5 per head 115.00 1 wagon apprd. @ 60.00 16 Head sheep more or less valued @ $1.25 ea. 20.00 ½ of the rest 26 acres of land valued @ $2 per acre for year 1866 26.00 Promissory notes amounting to one hundred and Twenty three dollars besides interest on The following person to wit: __123.00 $714.00 Having completed the foregoing Inventory and appraisement, I have on this day closed the same in testimony whereof I have caused said appraisers to sign these presents in the presence of the undersigned lawful and competent witnesses called for the purpose and me recorder this the 8th day of November AD 1866. Tugwell, Administrator of the Estate of Enoch Jones, Decd. after first having given due and legal notice by posting advertisements at more than three public place in the Parish, the newspaper published in said parish not being willing to insert advertisement at the legal rates, for more than ten clear days proceeded to offer and sell the property of said Estate in accordance with the order of the Honorable 11th District court and that the following persons became purchasers to wit: M. E. Tugwell bought 1 lot kitchen furniture @ $18.00 1 lot household furniture @ 11.50 1 lot farming tools @ 7.50 1 wagon @ 75.50 11 head meat hogs @ 121.00 11 head stock hogs @ __55.00 $288.50 W. T. Murray bought one black steer 8.00 S. Murray bought 1 red steer 5.00 1 large heifer 21.50 1 cow & calf __12.80 $22.80 Amount to carry $318.80 T. M. Post bought one small heifer 4.50 John Russell bought 1 pair Cow & yearling 5.00 1 pair cow & yearling __10.00 15.00 M. M. Harris bought 8 head of sheep 12.80 T. M. Post bought 8 head of sheep 12.20 Amounting to $364.30 Three hundred and sixty four Dollars and thirty cents. The several purchasers heaving complied with the terms of sale by giving their note with approved security, the property was accordingly adjudicated to them respectively, in testimony whereof I have signed these presents this the twenty ninth day of November AD 1866.
