His unit formally entered the service of the Confederate States of America on 14 May 1862 at Monroe. This unit served in the swamps on the Louisiana side of the Mississippi river in northeastern Louisiana during the summer and early fall of 1862, resulting in much sickness among the troops. Larkin Lowery most likely perished from disease in the swamps or in a Monroe hospital on 29 August 1862. ================================================================================== To the Honorable the Judge of the 11th Judicial District Court in and for the Parish of Union, State of Louisiana. The petition of Martha A. Edmonds, a resident of said Parish, respectfully represents unto your honor that Larkin Lowery, late of said Parish departed this life on or about the twenty ninth day of August, last leaving petitioner a widow in community and two minor children, the issue of their marriage between petitioner and the deceased to wit: Sarah E. E. A. Lowery and Georgia A. Lowery and a considerable estate consisting of land, slaves and personal property, rights and credits. She represents that as widow in community and by right of her being the Natural Tutrix to her said children. She is entitled to administer the said Estate. She therefore prays that an inventory and appraisement may be made according to law and that after due proceedings having been had, she may be appointed Administratrix of the same and appointed and confirmed Natural Tutrix to her said children and George W. Lowery, Under tutor and for such other orders and decrees as may be needful and proper. H. Regenburg, Atty. State of Louisiana Parish of Union The premises considered, it is ordered and decreed that the within petition of M. A. Edmonds to be appointed Administratrix of the Estate of Larkin Lowery be advertised according to law. It is further ordered that W. C. Smith, Parish Recorder &c be and he is hereby authorized and commanded to make an inventory and appraisement of the property belonging to said Estate and due return thereof make to this office without delay. Edmonds be appointed Administratrix of the Estate of Larkin Lowery, Decd. and upon his giving bond and taking the oath required by law, that letters do issue to her. Egan, Judge of the 11th District Court, Parish and State aforesaid in the just and full sum of Twenty three thousand Dollars to the true and faithful payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs and assigns firmly by these presents. Date at Farmerville, La. September 22nd, 1862. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the said Martha A. Edmonds has this day been duly and legally appointed Administratrix of the Estate of Larkin Lowery, Decd. and she has taken the oath prescribed by law. Now therefore if the said Martha A. Edmonds shall faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all and singular the duties incumbent on her as Administratrix of said Estate and shall faithfully account to the Judge of the said court for all monies or property received from this or any other state and shall render a true and faithful account of all his acts and doings in and about said Estate to the Judge of said Court and whenever legally required so to do pay over all sums of money or other property of whatever nature to the proper person or persons to receive the same, the this obligation to be null and void. Otherwise to be and remain in full force and virtue against the principal and her said securities. Done, signed and acknowledged before me this the 22th day of September 1862. Martha A. State of Louisiana 11th District Court Parish of Union Whereas, Martha A. Edmonds has this day been duly and legally appointed Administratrix of the Estate of Larkin Lowery, Decd. and she has taken the oath prescribed by law and also given bond with good and sufficient security. Now, therefore, the said Martha A. Edmonds is hereby duly and legally appointed Administratrix of the Estate and also empowered and authorized to do and perform all acts appertaining to said appointment according to law. Lowery, Admx. of the Estate of Larkin Lowery, Decd. respectfully represents that the personal property by late events has become of no profitable use to said Estate and is expensive to keep. She therefore prays for an order to sell all the personal property of said Estate and that she be authorized to make the said sale and for such other orders in the premises as may be necessary. H. State of Louisiana 11th Judicial District Court Parish of Union Let the prayer of the above petitioner be granted and it is ordered and decreed that all the personal property belonging to the Estate of Larkin Lowery, Decd. be sold under the articles of the Code of Practice regulating said sales. It is further ordered and decreed that Mrs. Martha A. Harper, the Admx. of said Estate be and she is hereby authorized to make the said sale and due return thereof make to this office according to law. Lewis Clerk, District Court To the Honorable the Judge of the 11th Judicial District Court in and for Union Parish, State of Louisiana. The petition of Martha A. Edmonds, Admx. of the Estate of Larkin Lowery, Decd., a resident of said Parish respectfully represents that there is among the property of said Estate a horse, of no profitable use to the Estate and expensive to keep. She therefore prays your honorable court, that an order may issue, ordering the sale of the said horse for cash payable in confederate or state bonds and at public auction according to law. She further prays that she be authorized to make the said sale and for such other orders and decreed in the premises as the case may require. H. Regenburg, Atty. Let the prayer of Petitioner be granted and it is hereby ordered that the horse mentioned on the petition be sold at public auction for cash and that the petitioner be authorized to make the said sale and make due return of the same to this office. The petition of John Edmonds, a resident of said Parish and State respectfully represents unto your Honor that the minor heirs of Larkin Lowery, Decd, to wit: Martha George and Sarah E. E. A. Lowery are without a legal Tutor, their mother Martha A. Edmonds, having forfeited her right to the Natural Tutorship by entering into a second marriage. Petitioner represents that he is the Natural maternal and only surviving grand father of the said minors and that the tutorship therefore legally de[unreadable] upon him. Wherefore he prays that he may be appointed tutor to the said minors and such other proceeding had as may be necessary. He represents that the property of said minors is as yet in the hands of the Admx. of the Estate of Larkin Lowery, which is yet unsettled and that therefore no inventory is necessary at present. He prays for such orders &c &c as may be necessary in the premises. H. Regenburg, Atty.
