Ott enlisted as a private in Company C, 19th Louisiana Infantry at Spearsville on 4 March 1863. He was present on muster rolls in March and April. The muster roll of 31 October 1863 listed him as having deserted at Jackson, Mississippi on 26 July 1863. However, he was captured by the Yankees in July 1863 near Jackson, sent to Snyder's Bluff, Mississippi on July 30, and then forwarded to Camp Morton, Indiana on 7 August 1863. He spent the next eighteen months in prison at Camp Morton. Ott was released after taking the Oath of Alleigiance on 22 May 1865. At that time, he gave his residence as Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He had dark complexion, black hair, blut eyes, and his height was 5' 10.5". ================================================================================== ================================================================================== To the Honorable the Judge of the 11th Judicial District Court in and for the parish of Union, State of Louisiana. The petition of Sarah C. Agee, wife of James L. Agee, her husband, who joins herein to authorize and assist his said wife to present this petition and stand in judgment thereon respectfully shows that about August 1865 Daniel V. Ott departed this life intestate leaving a small estate and two minor children, the issue of his marriage with petitioner and your petitioner as surviving widow to wit: John A. Ott and Mary V. Ott. Petitioner further avers that she has by entering into another marriage without first convoking a family meeting forfeited her right as Natural Tutrix of the said minors but as the appointment of a Tutor is necessary. She prays that a family meeting be convoked according to Law to advise and recommend in regard to the appointment of a Tutor to the said minors for all further orders and decrees necessary and for general relief &c Jno. L. Barrett, Atty. State of Louisiana 11th Judicial District Court Parish of Union In the matter of the Tutorship of the minors John A. and Mary V. Ott. The premises considered, it is hereby ordered, adjudged and decreed that Wm. C. Smith, Notary, do convoke a family meeting composed of M. H. Thornton, Isaac E. Griffith, Noel B. Nelson, John S. Washam and W. H. Baldwin, friends of the aforesaid minors who shall advise and recommend with regard to the appointment of a suitable person to be appointed Tutor and one to be appointed Under tutor of the minors John A. and Mary V. Ott and that the same be held according to law and that he make due return of the same to this office. Done and signed in office on this the 12 November 1866. J. W. Smith, Recorder State of Louisiana Parish of Union Be it remembered that on this the 12th day of November AD one thousand eight hundred and sixty six by virtue of an order of the 11th Judicial District Court in and for said Parish and to me William C. Smith, Notary public and Recorder and Ex Officio Notary Public in and for said Parish. Directed, I caused to come before me at my office in the Town of Farmerville at 3 o’clock PM the following named male citizens of Union Parish of lawful age to wit: Malin H. Thornton, Isaac E. Griffith, Noel B. Nelson, John S. Washam and H. M. Baldwin, friends of the minors John A. and Mary V. Ott, convoked as a family for the purpose of giving their advice as to the appointment of a tutor and Under tutor to the aforesaid minors. Said members being first duly sworn by me proceed to give their advice and after mutual deliberation, they advise and recommend that Sarah C. Agee, the mother of said minors be appointed Tutrix and that James L. Agee, husband, Co-tutor and Thomas Bennett be appointed Under Tutor on complying with law in such cases made and provided testimony whereof, I have caused said members to sign this process verbal in the presence of the undersigned lawful and competent witnesses who signs with said members and me recorder this the day and date above written. Thornton To the Honorable the Judge of the 11th Judicial District Court and Parish of Union, State of Louisiana. The petition of Sarah C. Agee and of James L. Agee who joins herein for the purpose of aiding and assisting his said wife and authorizing her therein both residence of aforesaid Parish and State respectfully shows that a family meeting convoked by order of you Honorable Court to consult, advise and recommend in regard to the appointment of tutor and Under Tutor to the minors John A. Ott and Mary V. Ott has been duly holden and the process verbal of these proceedings duly returned to this court which process verbal is hereto affixed and made apart of this Petition. Therefore, petitioner prays that the same may be approved and homologated and that the parties therein recommended be duly appointed Tutors and Under Tutor to the said minors and for general relief &c. State of Louisiana 11th Judicial District Court The premises considered, it is hereby ordered that the proceedings of the family meeting hereto appended as a part of the petition be and they are hereby approved and homologated and that Sarah C. Agee be and she is hereby appointed Tutor and her husband James L. Agee Co-tutor of the minors John A. Ott and Mary V. Ott on their giving bond and taking the oath required by law and that Thomas Burnett is hereby appointed Under tutor to the aforesaid minors on his taking the oath prescribed by law. Agee has been duly and legally appointed and confirmed as Co-Tutor of the following named minor heirs of the Estate of Daniel V. Ott, Deceased to wit: John A. and Mary V. Ott and he has taken the oath prescribed by law. Now therefore, the said J. L. Agee is hereby duly and legally authorized and empowered to do and perform all the acts appertaining to the said appointment according to law. Smith, Recorder and Ex Officio Notary Public in and for said Parish directed authorizing me to make an Inventory and Appraisement of all the property, rights and credits belonging to the Estate of Daniel V. Ott, Decd. late of the Parish of Union, La. and being assisted by H. M.
