Ramsey was born about 1832 in DeKalb County Georgia. In 1860 he lived on his farm near Shiloh with his family. Ramsey enlisted as a corporal in Company H, 31st Louisiana Infantry Regiment at Monroe on 14 May 1862. His military file indicates that he died at home in Union Parish on furlough on 24 August 1862, although the court record below gives a death date of August 20. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== To the Honorable the Judge of the 11th Judicial District Court in and for the Parish of Union, Louisiana. The petition of Amanda Fitzgerald, resident of said Parish, respectfully represents unto your honor that James W. Ramsey, late of your said Parish, departed this life on or about the 20th day of August last, leaving petitioner a widow in Community and three minor heirs the issue of the marriage between herself, Petitioner, and the said deceased to wit: Andrew J., Elexa J. and Thomas G. Ramsey, also an Estate consisting of land and personal property, rights and credits. Petitioner represents that being the Natural Tutrix of said heirs and partner in Community, she is legally entitled to the Administration. She therefore prays to be appointed Administratrix of said Estate and Tutrix to her said children and G. H. Fitzgerald Under Tutor, that an Inventory and appraisement be made according to law, and for such other orders and decrees as the case requires. H. Regenburg, Atty. State of Louisiana Parish of Union The premises considered, it is ordered and decreed that the petition of Amanda Fitzgerald to be appointed Administratrix of the Estate of James W. Ramsey be advertised according to Law. It is further ordered that W. C. Smith, Parish Recorder &c be and he is hereby authorized and commanded to make an inventory and appraisement of the property belonging to said Estate and due return thereof make to this office without delay. Done and signed in office this the 10th of September 1862. James L. Guthrie Clerk, District Court State of Louisiana Parish of Union By reason of the proper and legal advertisement having been made and no opposition filed thereto and by further reason of the law, it is ordered and decreed that Amanda Fitzgerald be and she is hereby appointed Administratrix of the Estate of James W. Ramsey, Decd. and upon her giving bond and taking the oath prescribed by law that letters do issue to her. Done and signed in office this the 22nd day of September 1862. Jas. L. Guthrie, Clerk State of Louisiana Parish of Union I, Amanda Fitzgerald, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully and impartially discharge all and singular the duties incumbent on me as Administratrix of the Estate of James W. Ramsey, Deceased to the best of my ability and understanding. So help me God. Amanda Fitzgerald Sworn to and subscribed before me this the 20th day of September 1862. James L. Guthrie Clerk, District Court Succession of James W. Ramsey, Decd. State of Louisiana Parish of Union Whereas Amanda M. Fitzgerald has this day been duly and legally appointed Administratrix of the Estate of James W. Ramsey, Decd. and she has taken the oath prescribed by law. Now therefore the said Amanda Fitzgerald is hereby duly and legally authorized and empowered to do and perform all and singular the duties appertaining to said appointment according to law. Given under my hand and the seal of said Court this the 23rd day of September 1862. Jas. L. Guthrie, Clerk State of Louisiana Parish of Union Know all men by these presents that we Amanda Fitzgerald as principal and I, W. Crawford and G. H. Fitzgerald as her securities are held and firmly bound unto W. B. Egan, Judge of the Eleventh Judicial District Court, Parish and State aforesaid in the just and full sum of Four hundred and fifty Dollars to the true and faithful payment thereof well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, assigns and legal representatives firmly and in solido by these presents. Dated Farmerville, La., September 20th 1862. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the said Amanda Fitzgerald has this day been appointed Administratrix of the Estate of James W. Ramsey, Decd. and he has taken the oath prescribed by law. Now therefore if the said Amanda Fitzgerald shall well and truly discharge all the duties incumbent on her in her said administrative capacity and shall render annually to the Judge of said court a correct account of all her acts in and about said Estate and a true account give of all the money or other property received from this State or any other State belonging to said Estate and to the said Judge and whenever legally required so to do pay over all sums of money or other property to the proper person or persons to receive the same, then the above obligation to be null and void. Smith Parish Recorder State of Louisiana Parish of Union Be it remembered that on this the 18th day of September AD 1862 One thousand eight hundred sixty two, I, William C. Smith, parish Recorder & Ex Officio Notary Public in and for said parish and State directed duly commissioned and qualified, in pursuance of an order of the 11th Judicial District Court in and for said Parish and State and to me directed, I repaired to the late residence of James W. Ramsey, Decd. late of the Parish of Union for the purpose of making an Inventory and Appraisement of all the property both real and personal belonging to the Estate and Succession of said James W. Ramsey, Decd. and whereas L. J. Loveless and Wm. H. Johnson two good and lawful citizens of the Parish of Union being sworn by me the said Recorder as appraisers and in the presence of lawful and competent witnesses proceeded to make said Inventory and Appraisement as follows: 1 sorrel horse apprd. @ $90.00 2 cows and calves apprd. @ 40.00 22 head stock hogs more or less apprd. @ 66.00 5 augers & 3 chisels apprd. @ 1.55 1 drawing knife & 1 hand saw apprd. @ 2.00 1 iron square apprd. @ .20 Lot of farming utensils, plow, hoes, geer etc. 10.00 2 pr. steelyards apprd. @ 1.50 Lot potware, 2 ovens, 2 pots, 1 spider And kettle &c 5.00 1 wash pot apprd. @ 1.50 Lot table ware, crockery, glasses, cutlery &c 5.00 Lot books say 10 volumes apprd. @ 2.00 1 clothes press, 1 looking glass apprd. @ 3.50 2 Bedsteads, beds & furniture apprd. @ 25.00 1 pr. flat irons, shovel & tongues apprd. @ 1.50 1 dining table, 1 churn apprd. @ 2.50 2 water buckets apprd. @ 1.00 1 spinning wheel apprd. @ 4.00 5 common chairs apprd. @ 3.00 75 bushels of corn more or less apprd.
