This succession book was typed in the early 1800s from a large number of loose probate/succession papers. Ratcliff's son-in-law, Benjamin Harrison, lived in Union Parish in 1840, and Ratcliff may himself have lived in what became Union Parish in 1839. ======================================================================================= ======================================================================================= Succession of Jesse Ratcliff Account Rendered Jemima Ratcliff, wife of Benjamin Harrison In account current with the Estate of Jesse Ratcliff late of the Parish of Ouachita deceased as rendered by James Fort Muse, her constituted Attorney in fact, on the second day of May A.D. 1827. The heirs of Burney No. 24 __3110.66 Amount $8689.15 Balance of said Estate hands of this account 4936.48 From a careful examination of the papers and affairs of the Estate of Jesse Ratcliff, late of the Parish of Ouachita, decd. the above account with the accompanying vouchers from number one to number twenty four inclusive exhibits a correct settlement, of said Estate as far as the same ahs been administered. Leaving a balance in the hands of this account (and late heir at law of said Estate) the sum of four thousand nine hundred and thirty six dollars, and forty eight cents. And from the evidences of payment made for said Estate as appears on the exhibits above numbered, from one to twenty four; Benjamin Harrison, husband of this account, while acting as her constituted attorney in fact. Paid in his individual character the sum of seven hundred and sixty dollars, as per exhibits, one, six, eleven, twenty two, and twenty three, that he paid jointly with this accountant, the sum of one thousand eight hundred and twenty four dollars, and fifty cents. And that the sum of Six thousand one hundred and four dollars and sixty five cents, was paid by this accountant and sole heir at Law of said Estate, in the due course of Administration. She prays that the above account may be audited and allowed; and she hereby released the securities of her brother Mecajah Ratcliff, and her husband Benjamin Harrison from all further liability, on account of their purchases made at the sale of the said Estate of her father Jesse Ratcliff—hereby substituting herself in their stead, and binding herself to the creditors of said Estate if any now remain—and releasing them from all liability to her as heir at law of the said Jesse and Mecajah Ratcliff. Retaining her lien uninterrupted, against, and on the land and slaves sold as aforesaid, and against and on her said husband Benjamin Harrison, and his present and future property—until her rights and claims, derived from said Estate of her father Jessee and her brother Michajah Ratcliff, are met, and secured to her. James Fort Muse Attorney in fact for Jemima Harrison Probate Office May 12th 1827 Whereas the heir of Jessee Ratliff dec’d. files the within acct. of her Administration of the Succession of the said decedent on the 2nd day of May instant, and whereas public notice having been given according to Law, for all person’s to show cause if any they might have why the said account should not be allowed as prayed for, and that the same be filed & recorded. Witness: Oliver S. Morgan Judge of P. To Letter of Attorney Be it known to all whom it may concern: That I do hereby authorize, my wife Jemima Ratcliff, daughter and heir at law of Jesse Ratcliff, late of the Parish of Ouachita in the State of Louisiana, deceased and sister of Micajah Ratcliff late of SAID Parish deceased and heir at law of said Micajah. To transact all the business relative to the Estate of the said Jesse and Micajah to received the property purchased at the late of the Estate of said Jessee, and give discharge to the purchasers, thereof, to manage or dispose of said property or any part thereof to release and acquit all persons directly or indirectly in the purchases, secure thereby as otherwise concerned, or liable, for any part or portion of said Estate, and in all things relative to her rights, as heir as aforesaid, and to her interest generally. To act, contract, transact, do and perform, by herself, or her authorized attorney, the same as a feme sole. In testimony of what an transaction, I have been to set my hand in the presence of Henry C. Bartlett and Jesse Jones— specially called to witness the same this 25th day of September anno domicio 1824. H. C. Bartlett Benj. Harrison Jesse Jones I do hereby authorize James Foot Muse my attorney in fact to acknowledge the receipt of the property purchased by my husband Benjamin Harrison and my brother the said Micajah Ratcliff, at the sale of the Estate of my father Jessee Ratcliff late of the Parish of Ouachita in the State of Louisiana deceased, and to give discharge of their bonds given for said property—and release their securities—to same, for me, as heir as aforesaid, to make all settlements—for said debt the creditors of said Estate, and in all things relatives to the concerns of said Estates, to do and perform for me and in my name, to a final settlement of the same—as I have already ruined he property of said Estates purchased as aforesaid, and have it in my possession—holding myself accountable and bound for all the debts of the said Jesse my father and as far as my receipts under the inventory of the Estate of the said Micajah my brother hereby ratifying whatever my said attorney may legally do in the premises. In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand in the presence of Henry C. Bartlett and Jesse Jones specially called to witness the same this 25th day of September Anno domini 1824. H. C. Bartlet and Jesse Jones and made oath—that they were called as witnesses to the two foregoing instruments of writing and that they saw the said Benjamin Harrison sign the first, and I the said Jemima Harrison sign the second.
