Ross, Deceased & Tutorship of minor heirs of said Estate To the Honorable Judge of the Parish Court in and for the Parish of Union, State of Louisiana. The petition of Mrs. Catherine L. Ross, a resident of the Parish of Ouachita in said state respectfully represents that she is the widow of James R. Ross who died in the month of April AD 1868 in the State of Texas. She shows that her deceased husband owned no property in the State of Louisiana except some land in your Parish of Union and that he was largely in debt and that an administration of his Estate is necessary. She shows that she is entitled to the administration thereof as surviving wife of the deceased. She shows that she has three minor children issue of [unreadable] the deceased James. R. Ross, decd. to wit: Hattie Matilda [?] Charles [?] and Katie Louisa Ross only heirs of the deceased of whom petitioner is Natural Tutrix and she states that [unreadable] confirmed as their Tutrix and that and Under Tutor be appointed. She represents that she [unreadable] as surviving widow and for her minor children all the benefit of [unreadable]. Succession of James R. Ross and Tutorship of his minor children Parish Court, Parish of Union, State of Louisiana By reason of the law and the evidence being in favor of Petitioner, it is ordered that an inventory of the property of the Estate of James R. Ross, Decd. be made by the Recorder of Union Parish according to law and that Mrs. Catherine L. Ross be appointed and confirmed as Natural Tutrix of the minors Hattie Matilda, Charles Hart and Katie Louisa Ross, when [unreadable] the oath required by law and when a certificate from Clerk of the Eleventh District in and for said Parish of Union of the amount of the property of said minors according to the Inventory which shall be filed in his office shall have been recorded in the Mortgage book of the Parish of Ouachita wherein said Mrs. Ross resides and that James Hart of Ouachita Parish be appointed Under Tutor upon taking the oath required by law. It is further ordered that the application of Petitioner for appointment as Administratrix be advertised according to law. Done and signed in chambers this 27th day of December 1869. T. B. Smith, Recorder State of Louisiana Parish of Union Be it remembered that on this the 31st day of December AD one thousand eight hundred and sixty nine pursuant to an order of the Honorable the parish Court of Union Parish, State aforesaid and to me William C. Smith, Recorder and Ex Officio Notary Public in and for Union Parish, State of Louisiana, directed authorizing and commanding me to make an Inventory and appraisement of all the property, rights and credits belonging to the Estate of James R. Ross, deceased situated in the Parish of Union and being assisted by Wesley W. Guthrie and Wm. D. Mims, males of lawful age and residing in the Parish of Union who being duly appointed and sworn by me as appraisers proceeded to make said appraiser and inventory which consist in the undivided one half interest in a certain tract of land situated and being in the Parish of Union and State of Louisiana and described and remembered as follows to wit: Section No. Twenty eight (28) the North half of Section Twenty nine (29). The East half of the North East fourth of Section Thirty (30). The South East fourth and West half of North West fourth and South half of the East half of the North West fourth of Section nineteen (19) the South half East of the South West and South East fourth of Section Twenty (20). The South half and North half North East Fourth and the North half of the West half of the North East fourth of Section twenty one (21). The South West fourth of Section twenty two (22). The West half of Section twenty two (22). The West half of Section twenty seven (27). The North East fourth and West half North East fourth and West half of South West fourth and one hundred and twenty acres in the North part of the South West fourth of Section Thirty four (34) and Section thirty three (33). The South half of the North East fourth, the North East fourth of the South West fourth, the South East fourth of the North East fourth and the North West fourth of the South East fourth of Section No. twenty (20) all in Township No. twenty three (23) North Range No. two (2) East containing in the aggregate three thousand and forty acres more or less except that portion sold by James R. Ross to Thomas E. H. Martin in Record in my office in the Notorial Book of [?] page 478 described as follows: The SW ¼ of Section 22 and East ½ of Section 21 and SW ¼ of Section 27 and part of NE ¼ of East ¼ of SW ¼ of Section 27 and also part of the NE ¼ of Section 28 in Township 23 Range two (2) west containing in all four thousand and seventy seven acres more or less having a balance of two thousand five hundred and sixty two acres more or less appraised to be worth in cash one dollar and fifty cents per acre making in the aggregate three thousand eight hundred and forty three dollars ($3843.00) The undivided one half being one thousand nine hundred and twenty one and 50/100 dollars. In testimony whereof, I have caused said appraisers to sign their names hereto with me the said Recorder and in presence of the undersigned lawful and competent witnesses called for the purpose who sign with said appraisers and me Recorder this day and date above written. Ross as principal and James hart as security are held and firmly bound unto Thomas B. Tompkins, parish Judge in and for said Parish of Union or to his successors in office in the sum of twenty four hundred and five dollars for the payment of which we bind ourselves and each of us and each of our heirs, executors and administrators jointly and severally and firmly by these presents. Dated this 22nd day of March AD 1871. The condition of the above obligation is such that of the above bound Mrs. Catherine Ross, Administratrix of the Estate of the late James R. Ross, deceased [unreadable] according to law administrated the same and further does make and render a true, just and property account of her actions and doings [unreadable] received either by the aforesaid judge or his successors in office [unreadable] hereafter appear that any such will or testament was by the said deceased make then this obligation to be void or else to remain in full force and virtue. Ross has been duly and legally appointed Administratrix of the State of James R. Ross, deceased and she has given bond with good security and has taken the oath prescribed by law. Now thereto the said Catherine L. Ross is hereby duly and legally authorized and confirmed to do and perform all the acts appertaining to the said appraisement according to law. The petition of Catherine Louisa Ross, a resident of the Parish of Ouachita with respect represents that she is the Administratrix of the Succession of James R. Ross open in your said court and that she has no funds whatever on hand belonging to said succession. She shows that she has expended considerable sums to pay the taxes on the property and she prays [unreadable[. Morrison and Turner Succession of James R. Ross Parish Court, Parish of Union, State of Louisiana By reason of the law and the evidence being in favor of petitioner it is ordered that Mrs. Catherine Louisa Ross sell or cause to be sold after legal advertisement all the property on the inventory of said succession according to Articles 990, 991 and 992 of the Code of Practice. Done and signed in chambers on this the 1st day of December AD 1871. T. B. Tompkins Parish Judge Pursuant to an order of the Parish Court of Union parish, State of Louisiana authorizing the sale of all the property of James R. Ross, Decd. having advertised the same for more than thirty days by publishing in the Union Record, a newspaper published at Farmerville, La. on the 5th day of February 1872 between the legal hours of sale at the Court House door in Farmerville, La. after reading advertisement and certificate of Mortgage and fully making known the terms of sale in a loud voice to all present, I proceeded to sell at public auction the property set forth in inventory [unreadable]. Mrs. C. L. Ross became the purchaser through her agent Joseph Luck, she being the highest and last bidder on each forty acres as was officer [unreadable] of sale [unreadable] and signed before W. C. Smith, Parish Recorder of Union Parish, La. February 6, 1872. John M. Lee [NOTE: The first half of the page is too faded to read] I, Catherine L.
