Shields, resident of your said Parish of Union and state of Louisiana would represent that Ann Cleveland, late wife of your petitioner departed this life about the 1st day of October 1865[?]. that she was the partner in community of your petitioner in a certain tract of land described as follows amounting to one hundred sixty acres. That the deceased left at the time of her death the following children issue of the marriage of deceased and your petitioner to wit: John W. L., Mary T., Francis C., Elizabeth A. and Minnie C. all minors. That in order to offer a partition of the property between petitioner and said minors, it is necessary that the land be sold. Wherefore your petitioner prays that a family meeting be convoked consisting of the following relations and friends of the minors aforesaid to wit: William H. Shields, T. J. Shields, G. H. Jones, L. R. Taylor, R. P. Bruton to advise and deliberate for the intent said minors and that said meeting be convoked by W. C. Smith the said Parish Recorder and Ex Officio Notary Public and due return make according to law. Your petitioner further prays that he be recognized and confirmed Natural tutor of said minors and for all further orders necessary in the premises and for all and general relief. J. E. Trimble, Atty. Parish Court of Union Parish, La. Premises considered, it is ordered that the prayer of the foregoing petitioner be granted and that W. C. Smith, Parish Recorder and Ex Officio Notary Public convoke a family meeting the following named persons to wit: W. H. Shields, T. J. Shields, G. H. Jones, L. R. Taylor and R. P. Bruton, relatives and friends of the minors named in this petition for the purpose of advising with regard to the interest of said minors and due return make as the law requires. Shields be and is hereby appointed Tutor to his following named minor children to wit: J. W. L., Mary T., Elizabeth A, Francis C. and Minnie C. Shields, heirs of the Estate of Ann C. Shields, decd. By reason of the law and the advice of the family meeting convoking, it is ordered that the property described in said proceeding be sold in accordance with said family meeting and that J. W. Shields be acknowledged to sell said property and further that the proceeding so the family [NOTE: Top of page is too faded to read] Inventory and appraisement of the property belonging to said minors as pointed out by John W. Shields, their father to wit: a tract of land situated in the Parish of Union containing one hundred and sixty acres more or less, the undivided one half being the property of said minors to wit: the W ½ of NE ¼ and SE ¼ of NE ¼ of Section No. six and the SW ¼ of NW ¼ Section No. five T. 19 No of Range No. one East with all the improvements and appertences situated thereon. Valued and appraised to be worth in cash eight hundred dollars the undivided one half of this amount being the property of said minors say four hundred dollars ($400.00).
