Thomas was born about 1799 in South Carolina according to the 1850 census. The 1860 and 1870 censuses give his birth around 1811 or 1812. He lived in Alabama in the 1830s, but moved to what is now Union Parish between 1837 and 1840. He farmed in Ward 2 in 1870, so apparently died in 1871. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== [NOTE: The top of the first page of this document is too faded to read] Petitioner avers that an administration of said Estate is necessary and that she, a survivor in community has a better right to administer than any other person. Wherefore petitioner prays that this her application be advertised according to law and after legal delays that she be appointed Administratrix of the Estate of L. K. Thomas, Decd. on her giving bond and security and complying with all other legal requirements that an Inventory and Appraisement of the Estate be made. That an Attorney for absent heirs be appointed and for all other orders and decrees necessary in the premises and for general and equitable relief &c. Barrett & Trimble, Attys. Parish Court of Union Parish, Louisiana The premises considered and the law and evidence authorizing the same, it is hereby ordered and decreed that the application of Elizabeth Thomas to be appointed Administratrix of the Estate of Liberty K. Thomas, Decd. be advertised according to law. It is further ordered that Wm. C. Smith, Notary Public make an Inventory and Appraisement of said Estate and due return thereof to this office and it is further that he is hereby appointed attorney for absent heirs. Done and signed in office on this February 27th 1872. T. B. Tompkins Parish Judge Parish Court of Union Parish, Louisiana By reason of the law and the within application of Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas having been advertised for more than ten days prior to this date and no opposition having been filed thereto. It is ordered that Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas be and is hereby appointed Administratrix of the Estate of Liberty K. Thomas, Decd. and that upon giving bond with good security and taking the oath required by law that letters of Administration issue to her. Done and signed in chambers this 15th day of August 1872. Parish Judge I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully and impartially appraise the property that may be presented to me belonging to the Estate of Liberty K. Ouachita City and some claim said to be in the hands of James M. Turner which will be made by supplement at some further day not being able to get at the books at this time. Smith, Recorder and Ex Officio Notary Public in and for the Parish of Union, La. to make an inventory of the property both real and personal belonging to the Estate of Liberty K. Thomas, Deceased situated in the Parish of Union and whereas I did on the 8th day of April AD 1872 make an inventory of the real property and also the personal property except sundry accounts due said Estate in the book at Ouachita City. I, therefore, no in this supplementary Inventory the said account as furnished me in a list made out by O. B. Steel see list attached manual “A” total amount of accounts nineteen hundred and one and 04/100 dollars ($1901.04/100) valued and appraised to be worth in cash Seven hundred and thirty one & 8/100 dollars ($731.08/100) 1 Rocking chair apprd. @ $25 amounting in the aggregate to seven hundred and fifty six & 08/100 $756.08/100 Thus done and signed in my office in the town of Farmerville on this the fifteenth day of August AD 1872 in presence of James Edwards and D. D. M. Bruton & Ollie B. Steel as her securities are held and firmly bound unto the Honorable T. B. Tompkins, Judge of the parish Court in and for the Parish of Union, La. and unto his successors in office in the just and full sum of Ten thousand five hundred dollars to the true and full payment of which well and truly to be made. We bind ourselves, our heirs, administrators and legal representatives firmly and in solido by these presents. Dated in Union Parish, La. this eighth day of April AD 1872. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bounden Elizabeth Thomas has been appointed Administratrix of the Estate of L. K. Thomas, Decd. and she has taken the oath required by law. Now therefore if the above bounden Elizabeth Thomas as principal shall faithfully and impartially discharge all the duties incumbent on her as Administratrix of said Estate and shall render to the Judge of said Court a full and complete account of all her acts and doings in and for the Estate and shall when legally required so to do pay over all the money and deliver all the property of whatever nature that she may have in her hands belonging to the said Estate to the proper person or persons to receive the same. Then, this obligation to be null and void. Also to be and remain in full force and effect against the principal and her said security.
