D. Hudson ================================================================================== ================================================================================== INTRODUCTION The United States censuses taken between 1850 and 1880 consisted of a number of different parts called "schedules". What we normally refer to as "the census" is technically termed the "Population Schedule". The census enumerators also recorded data about farms in the "Agricultural Schedule" and about industrial production in the "Manufacturing Schedule." In 1850 and 1860, they recorded the names of slaveowners in the "Slave Schedule." The final schedule of this period was the "Mortality Schedule," which the government intended as a record of all those who died in the year preceding "census day", which at that time was June 1. The 1850 enumerator for Union Parish, George A. Hammonds, actually failed to carefully follow his directions when recording the Mortality Schedule. In that era, United States government considered slaves as mere chattel property, and never recorded their names on federal census records. However, Hammonds recorded the given names of all slaves who had died between 1 June 1849 and 31 May 1850. He also recorded surnames for many of them, presumably the surnames of their owners. By his mistake, Hammonds left a permanent record of the deaths of these human beings who would otherwise be entirely lost to history. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== SLAVE DEATHS IN UNION PARISH LOUISIANA REPORTED TO THE 1850 CENSUS ENUMERATOR ================================================================================== ================================================================================== |==========================|======|===|=====|=======|=======|=======|===========|=================|=========| | NAME OF SLAVE WHO | | S | | FREE |MARITAL| PLACE | MONTH | DISEASE, | NUMBER | | DIED BETWEEN | AGE | E |COLOR| OR | | OF | OF | OR CAUSE | OF | |1 JUNE 1849 & 30 MAY 1850 | | X | | SLAVE |STATUS | BIRTH | DEATH | OF DEATH. |DAYS ILL | |==========================|======|===|=====|=======|=======|=======|===========|=================|=========| | Calhoun | 1 | m | b | s | | La | Aug 1849 | Pneumonia | 2 days | | Lucinda | 1 | f | b | s | | La | Dec 1849 | Fever | 2 days | | Lewis | 1 | m | b | s | | La | July 1849 | Unknown | 1 day | | Nancy | 1 | f | b | s | | La | Oct 1849 | Unknown | Sudden | | Casandra | 56 | f | b | s | | Va | Feb 1850 | C | 2 yrs | | Jack Tabor | 6 | m | b | s | | Miss | Jan 1850 | Pluresy | Sudden | | Lucinda Smith | 42 | f | b | s | | Maryld| Mar 1850 | C | 2 yrs | | Bayley Smith | 1 | m | b | s | | La | Mar 1850 | Worms | 1 week | | Margarett | 3 | f | b | s | | La | Mar 1850 | Worms | 6 days | | Mahala | 1 | f | b | s | | La | Apr 1850 | Worms | 10 days | | Elizabeth Black | 1 | f | b | s | | La | Aug 1849 | Burned | Sudden | | Charles Barton | 15 | m | b | s | | Ala | May 1850 | Meazels | 15 days | | Wm.
