Carroll ================================================================================= ================================================================================= James R. Carroll and his younger brother Albert A. Carroll moved from Ward 9 in southwestern Ouachita Parish to north of Marion in the Cecil area in the 1870s. There they met and married sisters Sarah Frances Graves and Helen Marie Graves. James was born June 7, 1854, the eldest of five children of John and Frances Carroll. Albert, the third child, was born Dec. 3, 1857. Their siblings were Emily, born about 1856, married to Joel Richard Hendrix; Oscar, born about 1860, no further information; and John, born about 1863, no further information. Their father John (born about 1835) died in the defense of Vicksburg on June 23, 1863, and is buried in Soldiers’s Rest in the Cedar Hill Cemetery at Vicksburg. He had enlisted in Co. K, 31st Louisiana Infantry in Monroe on April 14, 1862. John had been listed in the Vicksburg burial records as “John Carnell. However, no records have been found to verify that a “John Carnell” ever served in Co., K, 31st Louisiana Infantry. Documentation of John Carroll’s death was found in a dairy kept by Cpl. John Fuller of Co. K., 31st Louisiana. John Carroll’s widow Frances married J.F. Thomas in 1866. John was the son of Thomas Carroll of Catahoula Parish who had relocated to Ouachita Parish by 1830. Thomas apparently died between 1844, his last recorded land transaction in Ouachita Parish, and 1850 when his widow Sarah (Esther) was found in the Ward 9 Ouachita Parish census with their three children. Thomas was born in the 1790s, the son of John Carroll (born probably in the 1760s) and Mary Scoggins of Natchez Post, MS. John died in early 1803 leaving his widow and four children. She then married James Wright a few months after John’s death. It is not known where John was born, or who his parents were. There is speculation that he and his probable brother Moses, who married Amelia Scoggins in Natchez Post, were two of the five orphaned sons of Absalom Carroll, who came to Colleton District, S.C., from Ireland. However, no documentation has been located in years of searching to establish this relationship. James was first found in Union Parish in a succession record of Mary Prudence Graves in January, 1878. He is listed in the 1880 Ward 2 census with his wife Sarah, along with two of her brothers Frank and Louis Graves, and James’ brother Albert living with them. James was listed as a farmer, with the other young men listed as farm laborers. It is not known exactly when James and Sarah were married as no marriage records have been found for them. However, they were married by January 21, 1878, when James filed a petition for a family meeting with regard to the succession of Sarah and Helen’s mother, Mary Prudence Graves, who had died in 1875. He was listed as a relative of the three minor children of Mary Prudence Graves. Albert and Helen were married on Sept. 4, 1884, in Union Parish. (Note: Helen is also spelled Hellen in various records and on her gravestone.) This was her second marriage as she had married George M. Andrews around 1878-79. They were living with his parents William C. and Virginia Andrews in the 1880 census in Ward 2, Union Parish. William had been appointed tutor to the three minor children of Mary Prudence Graves, including Helen. George and Helen had a son Milton who was born in August, 1879. Milton apparently died in childhood and it is not known what happened to George. Sarah, was born Feb. 23, 1858, and died Oct. 11, 1941 in Union Parish. She and her sister Helen, who was born June 19, 1863 and died Aug 1, 1928, in Union Parish, were two of 14 known children of Lewis Graves (about 1816-1865) of North Carolina and Mary Prudence Masterson (about 1825-1875) of Alabama. Lewis Graves was listed in Union Parish in the 1840 census. James died Sept. 28, 1893, in Union Parish and is burned in Union-Sadie Cemetery. Sarah then married Henry Marshall Lee Oct. 9, 1900. She is buried beside her first husband. James and Sarah had one known child, Stella, born Jan 10, 1882, Marion. She married Lucious C. Gresham. She died April 12, 1967, in Marion and is buried in Roark-Stewart Cemetery, Marion. Albert died Jan. 2, 1893, of gunshot wounds during an argument with five other men at Marion. He is buried in Sadie-Union Cemetery beside his wife Helen. James was also wounded in the shootout, but it is unknown if his death nine months later was as a result of those wounds. Involved in the shootout were Wade Cox, Oscar Cox, Lee Cox, R.A. Alexander, and T.J. Roark. Alexander and Wade Cox were convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to prison. (See entry in Biographies section under Albert A. Carroll for details of the shooting and trial. See also in the Probate section Albert A. Carroll’s succession record.) Albert had been involved in several land transactions in Union Parish, according to records at the court house: July 17, 1886, bought land from Richard Gibson Aug. 16, 1886, bought land from Taylor Webster (at sheriff’s tax sale) July 2, 1887, sold land to Union Parish School Board July 23, 1889, sold land to T. J. Roark May 21, 1891, sold land to Thomas J. Roark Oct. 1, 1892, sold land to Mrs. U.AS. Brown Nov. 22, 1892, sold land to T.J. Roark. At the time of his death Albert owned approximately 120 acres, described in the inventory of his estate as being: “The North half of the North-East quarter and the South-East quarter of the North East quarter of Section Twenty One, Township 23, R 2E, containing 120 acres more or less.” Albert and Helen had five children: 1. Robert Garland, born June 7, 1885, Marion; married. Mary Willie Kenley; died Jan. 21, 1944, El Dorado., AR, buried in Arlington Cemetery, El Dorado. 2. Maude Irene (Rena), born April, 1887, Marion; died Marion between 1900- 1910; burial believed to be in Union-Sadie Cemetery although no marker remains. 3. Lula Cleo, born Feb. 2, 1890, Marion, married Johnny Walker; died Dec. 14, 1955, Longview, TX; buried in Longview. 4. Albert Carlton, born February, 1891, Marion; married first Addie Burns; married second Pauline Jenkins; died March 2, 1961, Marion; buried in Union-Sadie Cemetery. 5. Mary Frances (Mae), born April 13, 1893, Marion; married Habib “Herman” Mickel; died April 20, 1976, Monroe; buried Riverview Cemetery, Monroe. ############################################################# File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/union/bios/carroll.txt
